Sinovac Vs Pfizer: Which Vaccine Is More Effective? Health DG Dr Noor Hisham Provides An Answer
While getting COVID-19 vaccination should be top priority for every Malaysian, there are those who, for some strange reasons, are still adopting the 'wait and see which vaccine is better' approach.
This news report should clear that right up.
Both works the same
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has revealed that it doesn't matter which vaccination you opt for, because all of them serve the same purpose. He told Bernama that medical data from vaccine use showed that both Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines are equally effective against COVID-19.
The medical data, according to Dr Noor Hisham, was derived from a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The report detailed the administration of the Sinovac vaccine in Chile on 4.2 million fully vaccinated individuals compared to 5.5 million unvaccinated residents between February 2021 to May 2021.
The study also documented 218,784 COVID-19 cases.
"Sinovac was found to reduce COVID-19 infection by 65.9 per cent, reduce hospitalisation by 87.5 per cent, reduce intensive care unit (ICU) admission by 90.3 per cent and reduce deaths by 86.3 percent," he was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said the Pfizer trial that reported efficacy of 95 per cent was very small, as the team behind the study only analysed 170 COVID-19 cases involving a group of eight vaccinated and 162 unvaccinated individuals.
Nevertheless, he believed that both vaccines are very much similar in preventing COVID-19 severity.
"Both are very effective at preventing severe disease and hospitalisation, but less effective against mild or asymptomatic COVID-19," he said.
So, if you're one of those people who prefers one vaccine over another, just go with any one of them. The most important thing is to get vaccinated, and not waste time debating which one is better.
