Considering increasing awareness on mental health issues including suicide, it's a wonder that attempting suicide is still a criminal offence in Malaysia.

If you're unaware, under Section 309 of the Penal Code, "whoever attempts to commit suicide, and does any act towards the commission of such offence, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with fine or with both."

Crazy, right?

A lot of people agree that it's crazy to imprison someone who is already at their lowest and have been fighting to decriminalise suicide.

Looks like all the fight will finally bear fruit. Soon.

Home Ministry and AG Office have agreed

According to reports in several media, the government is moving forward with the plans to decriminalise suicide.

Deputy Health Minister II Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said that home minister and the attorney-general have agreed to abolish Section 309 of the Penal Code in parliament today ( 7 October).

"Decriminalisastion of suicide under Section 309 of the Penal Code has indeed been discussed for a long time and the process is underway.

“Now it is with the Cabinet for amendments,” Aaron told Kemaman MP Che Alias Hamid who asked about it in parliament, reported Malay Mail.

We hope the process to make this official will be over soon and nobody is charged in the meantime.
