But here's the bad news: the number of Malaysians being laid off could be higher than previously predicted.
Malaysian workers are in for a tough time
Recruitment company JobStreet recently released the result of a survey they have been running about the state of employment in the country, and the numbers are sadly not very encouraging.
According to the survey which was conducted in May and involved 5,000 respondents, one in five Malaysians who were previously employed have been retrenched due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On top of that, the survey also found that 35 per cent of Malaysians were asked to take a pay cut of more than 30 per cent.
But the most shocking number is this: the survey predicts that more than two million Malaysians are expected to end up losing their jobs by the time the dust settles.
The number doubles the prediction of one million unemployed Malaysians made by industry experts.
But here's the silver lining though: JobStreet reveals that several sectors are actively looking for employees, namely retail and merchandise, healthcare and medicine, computer and information technology, manufacturing and production as well as banking and financial services.
So, if you're one of those affected by retrenchment or unemployment, don't give up hope yet.
