After a baby dugong washed ashore on its beaches last month, a second orphan baby dugong was found stranded on a southern Thai beach last Monday (1 July).
According to a report by the AFP, the new dugong was found with scratches on its back and had since been taken to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre for rehabilitation.
As the kingdom is currently swept by dugong fever, one of the country’s princesses, Princess Sirivannavari, has decided to name the baby dugong Jamil.
Thailand's Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) told the news agency that the name means ‘handsome sea prince’ in the Yawi language.
The DMCR also said in a press statement that the Princess has "both dugongs under her royal patronage".
The Princess has also been hard at work setting up working teams to "conserve rare and near-extinct marine animals", considering that Southern Thailand's waters are home to about 250 dugongs, which is classified as vulnerable.
The first dugong, named Mariam, became a social media star in the country when her photos and videos went viral last month.
In fact, Mariam and also Jamil will reportedly get their own reality TV show soon as the DMCR is now setting up a livestream of her in captivity.
