There is a way to treat polluted river water naturally and this group of Form Five students just attempted it.

A total of 92 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pasir Gudang invented mud balls that can help solve water pollution issues and improve the water quality.

The students had undergone a smart partnership programme between the school and the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) to work on this water treatment project.

How does it work?

According to the school principal Rosnah Ismail, the mud balls will stabilise the water pH level due to the combination of clay and organic materials, which can help to reduce foul smells and break down the organic molecules and waste.

She also told Bernama that the school will be cooperating with MPPG to improve the water conditions in the district, especially Sungai Masai which is quite polluted because of industrial activity in the area.

But SMK Pasir Gudang wasn’t the first to attempt the mud ball water treatment method.

In 2009, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa resort had incorporated mud balls as one of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

The Sabah resort adopted the Effective-Microorganism (EM) mud balls to clean up rivers, lakes, drains and anywhere that had concentrated deposits of sludge and slime.

The Penang Council had also implemented this mud ball method by tossing them at the Gurney Drive waterfront in the same year.

So for those of you who are not celebrating Hari Raya this weekend, maybe this can be your project for the long weekend!
