Most hawker centres in Penang aren't exactly huge, so when there's a crowd, it can be difficult to maintain social distancing.

However, that does not excuse businesses from not adhering to the SOPs set by the government during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Three famous hawkers in Penang learnt this the hard way when their premises were ordered to close until they can show that they are able to follow the SOPs.

No physical distancing

According to The Sun, the three hawker centres on Campbell Street, Hutton Lane and Karpal Singh Drive did not adhere to SOPs which only allowed two patrons to share a table.

Penang Island City Council spokesperson confirmed the closure and had said that the state government could not compromise on such things.

The island, which enjoyed green zone status for 91 days has been dealing with new cases the past few weeks.

Currently, almost all locations in Penang, bar two on the mainland, has recorded new cases.

New cases in Penang

There are 11 active cases in Penang, believed to have originated from the Sivagangga and Tawar clusters in Kedah.

More than a hundred people have been instructed to be on home quarantine as well, including several doctors and nurses who treated a man for a leg wound at a private hospital who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Remember guys, COVID-19 is still around and the only way to stay safe is to wear masks, maintain physical distancing and practicing good hygiene.

Let us all continue being vigilant.
