Recently, many Malaysians reported a significant increase in their electricity bills compared to previous months. While some users were unaffected, others began to question whether their bills had been calculated incorrectly.

An error occurred while retrieving the Tweet. It might have been deleted.

A glitch in the myTNB app

In response to the concerns, TNB issued a statement confirming that a technical error in the myTNB app had caused inaccurate electricity usage graphs for July to be displayed. However, the company clarified that the glitch only affected the visual representation within the app and did not impact actual billing or meter readings.

To address the issue, TNB temporarily removed the July usage graph from the app. They reassured users that their electricity usage for July remains accurate and that the final bill, issued after the billing cycle, reflects the correct amount.

TNB stated, “We assure users that their July electricity usage has not been affected. Customers can refer to their final bill after the billing cycle for the accurate amount.”

Glitch resolved

In a follow-up update, TNB announced that the glitch has been resolved. The company also emphasised that it will continue to monitor the system to ensure a smooth and reliable user experience.

“TNB apologises for any confusion regarding the issue and we appreciate the patience of our users throughout the maintenance process. We want to once again assure our users that this issue will not affect meter readings or final billing for the month of July.”

New tariff structure introduced

For context, TNB has introduced a new tariff structure starting in July. This updated billing system replaces the previous tiered pricing model with a transparent and itemised format. The new structure includes separate components for energy, capacity, network, and retail costs. It also introduces incentives such as the Energy Efficient Incentive and an expanded Time-of-Use scheme, aimed at encouraging more efficient electricity consumption.
