Warning: tropical storm Pabuk is set to hit the northern and east coast of Malaysia.
Videos of oil rigs in Terengganu being battered by strong winds and high tides have been making rounds on social media for the past few days, sparking concerns about the safety of the people working there.
According to a report by New Straits Times, Petronas has activated the emergency response team to help assist and ensure the safety of the personnel working at the rig. It is said that all staff members are safe and the wind speed has slowed down as of today.
Apart from Terengganu, a few tourist spots in Malaysia and Thailand are also expected to be hit by the storm.

It was also forecasted that Pabuk will hit Langkawi at 2pm.
Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lieutenant Col (PA) Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacob advised locals and tourists to steer clear of coastal areas during this time.
“High waves are forecast for tomorrow, so we are advising against all water recreational activities, fishing and sailing for the time being,” Lt. Awang told the New Straits Times.
“Meanwhile, APM members will monitor the situation at four observation points, namely Chenang beach, Payar island, Pantai beach and Kuala Muda, to ensure safety,” he added.
The calm before the storm. A lot of trees will also be possibly uprooted during the storm, so it’s best to stay away from places with a lot of trees and try to avoid parking your vehicle underneath it.
As for the popular island destinations in Thailand, the Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy downpours and strong winds.
Flights and ferry services to and from Koh Samui were also reportedly cancelled.
Thousands of tourists flee Koh Phangan following the news of Pabuk Storm. Thai hotel operators have made several preparations by preparing sand bunkers, barricading the windows, stocking up on essentials and having a power-generator on standby.
Given the current situation, we hope that everyone who is nearby the affected areas will steer clear from coastal areas and move as far away as possible. Stay in and be safe guys!
