Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Has Been Awarded The ‘Ibu Negara’ Title
People say behind every successful man is a great woman and in Malaysia, that woman is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah, wife of our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir.
Not only does her family see her as great motherly figure, we as Malaysians also feel the same way too.
And recently, Malaysia’s first lady was conferred the tittle that’s fitting for someone like her – ‘Ibu Negara’.
The Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) bestowed the title upon Tun Dr Siti Hasmah for displaying “the hallmarks of true leadership”.
According to The Star, Asli chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said that the nonagenarian held values that are a powerful example to all Malaysians “at a time when some are using the narratives of race and religion to divide us”.
“She is an icon who inspires us to celebrate our diversity as a multicultural, multiracial and multi-religious nation,” he added.
In her acceptance speech, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah thanked her family who would’ve been proud to have seen her receive it and those who helped her during her early days as a doctor serving in Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.
"I owe it to the doctors, my bosses as well as village heads, midwives and traditional healers in the rural areas. They were the ones who taught me to become who I am today.”
"So, in receiving this honour, I ought to also thank them for the teachings and lessons," she said.
Tun Dr Mahathir was also present during the award ceremony.
Congratulations, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah! We can’t imagine anyone else but you who are worthy of the title. May you continue doing you and inspiring other women out there.
