A Unique or Pointless Doorgift? Couple Give Out Fighting Fish at Wedding
When planning a wedding, door gifts for your guests are something to carefully consider. Chocolates, egg flowers, edibles, and soap are all well and good, but they’re also…boring. Plus, if they are personalised with the couples' names, this might not mean much to guests.
However, a creative Malaysian couple has created a brand-new idea for wedding favours. X user @mhmmdhsm posted a video with the caption, “A one-of-a-kind doorgift. Saves costs.”The video then pans to a wedding registration table with large plastic bags next to it. The bags are unexpectedly filled with smaller packets of…fighting fish!"
The person filming the video picked up a plastic bag to show that it was filled with air, water, and a little blue and orange creature swimming around. The prices of the fighting fish, commonly known as betta fish, can vary based on factors like breed, color, fin type, and rarity. It typically costs between RM2 and RM30 for regular breeds.
However, many X netizens seemed to find that the gift wasn’t a good idea. Some called it animal cruelty, while others said it was an unnecessary responsibility for the guests. One wrote, “I pity the fish. Many think that it is easy to look after and put it in a small aquarium/bowl/container. Actually, they need a spacious environment to thrive.”
Another said, “Stupid idea. Doing weird things to become viral. I am confident that not more than 5% of the fish will survive more than 2 weeks if you give it to people with no interest and knowledge in caring for the fish, e.g., children. "
What do you think of this door gift? What would you do if you received this at a wedding?
