Short documentary producers Teng Poh Si and Cheyenne Tan's short film 'St Loise Superman', has been nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject Oscar!

The duo's work was nominated alongside four oher documentaries: In The Absence, Learning To Skateboard In A Warzone (If You're A Girl), Life Overtakes Me and Walk Run Cha-Cha.

Congratulations, guy!

Earlier, Malay Mail had reported that the duo, from Penang and Sarawak but based in the US now, have already won several awards for the documentary including the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Indy Short Film Festival, Traverse City Film Festival and Rhode Island International Film Festival.

The documentary tells the story of US battle rapper, activist and state representative of the state of Missouri,

His story is quite remarkable. At the tender age of 9, Bruce Franks Jr saw his brother getting shot and killed in front of him.

At 34, he is fighting against police brutality, racism, and inequality.

Although Franks Jr had announced that he will be stepping down from his hard-won seat, he is still a leader locals look up to.

The 25-minute documentary on him is directed by filmmakers Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan, and being distributed by MTV Documentary fils.

In an interview with Malay Mail, Teng had said that the idea for the documentary came from her desire to talk about 'Black Lives Matter' movement in the United States that fights systemic racism and violence against black people.

Teng's portfolio is quite remarkable too. Recently, another documentary produced by her, “Flirting With the Islamic State,” was nominated for Outstanding Interview at the Emmy Award.

Over the past decade, Teng had worked as a reporter for The New York Times, and producer for VICE and HBO.
Teng Poh SI
Currently, she is working for Al Jazeera English’s flagship award-winning documentary strand, Witness.

Tan may be newer to the documentary world, but she too has produced some interesting work.

“Starting From Scratch”, which she produced and directed, won the top prize at the CCH Film Festival.
Cheyenne Tan
Currently, she's working on two documentaries - one on Flint, Michigan where a major water crisis happened, and another on a hip hop crew in one of Asia’s biggest slums, called “Dharavi” in Mumbai, India.

'St Loise Superman' will be competing against nine other documentaries.

We'll have to wait till February 2020 to know if it wins, but just being shortlisted is a huge honour.

Let's keep all our fingers crossed for everyone involved in the making of the documentary. Good luck, guys!
