“We feel the love of a family” - Chinese New Year Holds Special Meaning for Uncle Mike's Foster Children
One of the heartwarming stories of 2024 was about Michael Tong Wai Siong, also known as Uncle Mike, who adopted three Malay boys after a chance encounter at an orphanage over 16 years ago.
Uncle Mike had raised Rafie, Rasyid, and Abdul Rahman, in accordance with Islamic teachings. He even fasted with his sons during Ramadan, woke them up on time, and was the one who cooked for ‘sahur.’ His dedication to their faith and well-being created a strong bond and a loving family environment.
Similarly, this Chinese New Year was even more proof of their beautiful relationship. When asked about celebrating Chinese New Year with his family, Rafei expressed only gratitude.
He explained that for the past 16 years, he and his siblings, Rasyid and Abdul Rahman, have always been treated well by Uncle Mike's family and were never considered strangers in the family.
"My siblings and I are grateful because we were given the opportunity to feel the love of a family,” he shared.
"Even though we have different religions, Uncle Mike's extended family never treated us like outsiders; they also considered us like their own children," said Rafei when contacted by Gempak.
Despite having different religions, Rafei mentioned that it did not prevent them from celebrating Chinese New Year according to tradition.
"Usually, when we go back for a big meal, we will just eat at a restaurant. We will wait for them to finish praying first before everyone gathers at the restaurant and eats together. Like yesterday, there were about 15 of us eating at the restaurant, and after that, we went back to Popo's house to spend time together," shared Rafei.
When asked about their usual preparations, Rafei said they are usually provided with two red outfits, but what is interesting is that they receive ang pau from their father.
Rafei also mentioned that the second day of the celebration at his grandmother's house would be more lively as there would be an open house and a lion dance.
"Today, we don't have time because there are various programmes we have to attend, but tomorrow there will definitely be an open house and also a lion dance," he said.
This story of love and sacrifice has captured the attention of Malaysians and earned Uncle Mike the Maulidur Rasul Award 2024 from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
