What Was A Helicopter Built In The 1950s Doing Flying Above The Penang Bridge?

Penangites spotted something they don’t see every day flying above the Penang Bridge since Tuesday and photos of it have been making the rounds on Facebook.

A low-flying Chinook helicopter was seen off Pulau Gazumbo, an island situated next to the bridge, sparking a massive frenzy online.

The question is: what was a military helicopter used by the United States since the Vietnam War in the 50s doing flying above our Malaysian food haven?

As it turns out, there's really nothing to be worried about!

In a report by the New Straits Times, the Penang police said their VAT 69 Commando Unit were conducting a training exercise with the US Army using the military assets.

Phew!

The Mint 17-2453 training at the Batu Uban Marine Base is currently taking place from 26 February to 18 March, said state police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye. Locals can expect to see more military assets from both countries flying in the air during this period.

This joint training meant to expose and strengthen the 69 Commando Unit when facing potential threats involves a total of 45 officers and personnel from the Malaysian unit and 12 officers and personnel from the US Army.

Penang locals can rest assured that the authorities will do what it takes to ensure the public’s safety throughout the training exercise and maintain smooth sailing traffic at the training sites.
