‘Winter’ Is No Longer Coming. In Fact, It Is Already Ending In Malaysia!
Last week, Malaysians had a breeze (literally) going to work or school.
Temperatures in our country dipped as low as 20 degrees Celsius, a weather that we Malaysians aren’t used to, given our tropical and humid climate.
This prompted Malaysians to share their ‘winter’ experience on social media saying that they “can’t believe the weather is as cold as London” or that they are finally utilising their winter coats in Malaysia – something highly unusual or unheard of on a normal day.
If you’re wondering why it’s quite chilly lately, well the Malaysian Meteorological Department (Met Malaysia) explained that the cold spell that hit the country was due to the north-east monsoon affecting the east coast of the peninsula.
The continuous rain also contributed to the decreasing temperatures.
While it’s been fun waking up to the unusually cold breeze in the morning and dressing up as if we live in a four-season country, just like all good things, everything must come to an end.
On Friday, Met Malaysia told The Star that there are “no signs” of temperatures dipping lower than that, and the cold weather is supposed to end on Sunday (14 January).
In other words, Malaysians can expect to see more sunshine this week onwards.
Well, if you really miss the cold weather, there's always Genting and Cameron Highlands, folks.
This isn’t the first time Malaysia has been hit with a cold spell. Back in 2014, temperatures dropped as low as 15.7 degrees in Kuala Krai, Kelantan.
According to Met Malaysia, it is normal for the east coast or northern regions of Malaysia to experience cold weather in January or February due to the Northeast winds.
