This is because Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that motorists can now tint their rear windshields and passenger windows as dark as they want under the new regulations, Astro Awani reported.
However, the front windshields, as well as the driver and front passenger side windows need to remain transparent, allowing 70 per cent and 50 per cent light through respectively.
He said the decision was made in response to the public’s desire to darken their vehicle windows to filter out the heat and for health purposes, such as medical skin conditions.
Before this, rear car windows tints had to allow at least 30 per cent of light through, as stipulated under the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass), 1991.
Anthony stressed that the new regulations only apply to private motor vehicles.
For motor vehicles that are registered and used for public transport and goods transport, the percentage of visible light transmission (VLT) should not be less than 70 per cent.
In incorporating flexibility in the new regulations, the government also allows motorists to have all their vehicle windows fully tinted but only for security and health reasons and of course, permission is needed to do so.
He said those who want this for security reasons would be charged a RM50 service fee for each application for the ministry’s approval. If their application is approved, they would be charged RM5,000 for a permit to have fully tinted vehicle windows.
