Recently, Malaysians have taken to social media to complain about the price hike on their electricity bill.

Many were curious why their bill saw a drastic increase compared to one or two months before.

Some have even shared that their bill has increased up to 200 per cent and others who experienced the same also disclosed photos of their bills to show the substantial difference between then and now.

This issue has caught the attention of the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry and it seems that it may not entirely be your fault if your electricity bill comes in at an absurd amount.

According to The Star, negligence and technical fault from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) were among the reasons for the bill hike.

This didn’t sit very well with minister Yeo Bee Yin, who disclosed the information and said that TNB must be held accountable for what happened or risk facing legal action from consumers.

The rakyat's not happy, she's not happy.
“They are not just going to get a slap on the wrist but must be accountable for this and resolve the matter with consumers. Fail to do so and they will face legal action,” Yeo said during a press conference.

Another reason many are facing bill hikes is because TNB allegedly now bills customers for electricity usage for over 30 days, instead of standard procedure to issue bills for just 30 days.

Most consumers who complained were part of the smart meter pilot project by TNB.

The Energy Commission received 300 complaints alone this month, which is 10 times more compared to last year.

They are currently investigating the issue and will submit a report to the ministry soon.

So guys, if you are one of those who are affected by this, you can contact the TNB Careline at 1300-88-5454 or visit any TNB office near you to check whether you have been overcharged or not.
