4 Things You Need To Know About Tesco’s Brand-New Outlet In Wangsa Walk
Seventeen years since Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd landed in Malaysia, it has become the go-to superstore for many Malaysians.
So much so that the retail chain has just opened the doors to its 60th outlet in Malaysia recently. That’s a lot of stores!
The latest Tesco superstore is located at the Wangsa Walk Mall.

What’s so special about this new store, you ask?
Well, here are three things you need to know about Tesco’s landmark outlet:
#1 It’s designed based on research

One thing that makes Tesco’s outlet in Wangsa Walk different is that it is much smaller than the usual 3,000-square-metres and upwards stores.
This is not to say that the new store will have lesser things, but rather, it’ll be more convenient for you to find the things you want without having to get a workout in the process.
The store in Wangsa Walk is only 2,000-square-metres, so it enables an average Malaysian to shop more efficiently.

Tesco Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Paul Ritchie said that the company’s research has shown that customers are often pressed for time and shopping for everyday necessities have become a chore.
“These days, customers would like to find the items that they want and finish their shopping as quickly as possible,” he said.
A sentiment we agree with. Between work, family, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, socialising and getting stuck in traffic, who has the time or patience to shop leisurely, right?
#2 They accept e-wallets

Ahh, we’re now living in the future. The Wangsa Walk store allows customers to use the Scan & Shop service to scan and pay for their own items without having to deal with a cashier.
(Side note: This service is also available at Tesco Kepong and Tesco Extra Ampang, with plans for more to be rolled out soon)
But get this: when using the service, you can also use an e-wallet to pay for your groceries.

“Bank Negara Malaysia data have shown that Malaysia has an 86 per cent internet penetration rate and a 64 per cent mobile penetration rate, which translates to a higher willingness for customers to pay through e-wallets rather than cash.
“With that in mind, our fully cashless Self-Service Checkout Counters in Tesco Wangsa Walk are not only accepting debit and credit card payments, but also accepts payments from seven different e-wallets players,” said Ritchie.
He added that this offering from Tesco’s side is also very much in line with the government’s aspiration in making Malaysia a cashless society, as well as the push towards e-wallets adoption, as outlined in the recent Budget 2021 announcement.
#3 A Malaysian-only workforce
Besides providing a one-stop shopping center for the essential at a reasonable price, the Wangsa Walk outlet will also be employing Malaysians only.
“Tesco Wangsa Walk is 100 per cent manned by Malaysians, further underlining our commitment in creating employment for Malaysians, but also the first store in which staff are taught every skill from managing the inventory to stocking the shelves.
“At Tesco, we don’t just believe in serving the communities we are in, but also the empowerment of our colleagues by upskilling them,” said Ritchie.
He also said that there are plans to open more Tesco superstores nationwide, which will offer even more job opportunities for the locals.
#4 Still the same low prices

Just like all other Tesco stores, the latest branch also offers value for money pricing. For example, despite the market prices, the price of chicken has remained at RM5.99 per kilo since August 2016, and a kilogram of prawns are priced at RM19.99 since March this year.
We’re never buying these two items anywhere else and we will sure be comparing prices from now on!

What are you waiting for, guys?
Tesco Wangsa Walk is now open and you can check out all the amazing things we mentioned above for yourself! Happy shopping.
