Fresh Flower Crabs, Mantis Shrimp & Mala Seafood: Inside The Westin KL's New Lautan Warisan Seafood Buffet

Weekend seafood buffets are nothing new in Kuala Lumpur, but The Westin Kuala Lumpur is putting a Nusantara-inspired spin on things with its newly launched Lautan Warisan: Nusantara Seafood Buffet at The Living Room.

Available every Friday and Saturday, the buffet combines fresh seafood, regional flavours from across the Malay Archipelago, and a sizeable spread of local and international dishes.

After making our way through the spread, a few standout dishes left a particularly lasting impression.

Seafood galore

The live seafood section was an obvious starting point. Among the highlights were the Flower Crabs and Mantis Shrimp, both of which tasted remarkably fresh and naturally sweet. The meat retained a firm, juicy texture instead of becoming flaky, making them some of the strongest offerings on the buffet line. The Salmon Sashimi was equally impressive, delivering the freshness you'd expect from a premium hotel buffet.

One of the buffet's biggest surprises wasn't found at the seafood counter, however. Guests can order a Mala Seafood Platter cooked fresh on the spot, and it quickly became one of our favourite dishes of the evening. The spice level is fairly punchy, but the addictive mala flavour makes it difficult to stop at a single serving.

Not just about the seafood

While seafood may be the main attraction, several non-seafood offerings deserve attention too.

The Tomahawk Steak, Roasted Lamb Leg and Roast Chicken were all flavourful and well-executed, while the Goan Fish Curry stood out thanks to its rich, savoury depth of flavour.

Another unexpected winner came from the pasta station. Made with Barilla pasta, the Kam Heong Pasta combined the fragrant, spicy notes of the classic local stir-fry style with al dente pasta, resulting in a dish we found ourselves returning to more than once throughout the night.

Save room for dessert

Dessert proved to be much more than an afterthought. The Bread Pudding was surprisingly good and delivered plenty of comfort with every bite, while the Lemon Meringue Tart emerged as the standout sweet treat of the evening. Its bright citrus flavour balanced the sweetness nicely, making it one of the most memorable desserts on the buffet.

Guests can also help themselves to free-flow Ice Kacang and Cendol, perfect for cooling down after the spicy mala seafood, before ending the night at the Chocolate Fountain with marshmallows for dipping. Tea drinkers will appreciate the selection of Dilmah teas available throughout the meal.

Lautan Warisan is available every Friday and Saturday from 6 PM  to 10 PM, priced at RM198 nett per adult and RM99 nett per child (7-12 years old), while children aged six and below dine for free.
