TLDR

  • Smith & Wollensky Kuala Lumpur introduces the ‘7.29PM’ Ramadan semi-buffet experience, combining its dry-aged Swinging Tomahawk steak with authentic traditional Malay dishes.
  • This Ramadan menu features heritage Malay hidang dishes such as Daging Masak Hitam and Sotong Bakar Perchik prepared by Chef Fatin Ashikin, alongside a selection of both Western and local sides and desserts.
  • Priced at RM269 per person, the concept balances the identity of a premium steakhouse with the warmth of sharing a relaxed yet exclusive berbuka puasa meal.

Smith & Wollensky Kuala Lumpur may be new to the city having opened in late 2025, but it enters its first Ramadan with a clear sense of identity. For 2026, the steakhouse introduces ‘7.29PM’, a semi‑buffet iftar experience built around its show-stopping dry‑aged Swinging Tomahawk.

The concept is straightforward but ambitious which is to take Smith & Wollensky’s signature dishes, pair it with a selection of authentically prepared Malay dishes, and frame it within the communal, celebratory spirit of berbuka puasa. The result is an experience that bridges premium Western steakhouse dining with the warm familiarity of Malaysian festive flavours.

A theatrical centrepiece

The Swinging Tomahawk has already become a distinctive signature for the restaurant, and within the context of a Ramadan meal, it becomes even more of an event. Suspended on its hanging rack before carving, the tomahawk naturally invites attention.

More importantly, it delivers on taste as well with the dry‑aging process giving the beef a rich, concentrated flavour.

What elevates the tomahawk here is the supporting cast of sides. The Natural Jus compliments the star of the show and lets the beef speak for itself without unnecessary complexity. The Truffle Mashed lean creamy rather than heavy, with the truffle used moderately enough that it complements rather than overwhelms the meat.

Roasted Potatoes add texture and some savouriness, while the Buttered Vegetables bring the bit of freshness you look for in a protein‑heavy meal. Meanwhile, the Corn Ribs bring a smoky sweetness and a pleasant chew, while the Sautéed Mushrooms, offer an earthy counterpoint that fits naturally with dry‑aged beef.

A standout was the Truffle Mac & Cheese, which is indulgent, dense, rich, and designed for diners who want a heavier side to round out the tomahawk experience.

Malay dishes with actual heritage

The Malay elements of the menu are led by Demi Chef Fatin Ashikin, whose upbringing in a Kuantan family deeply involved in masakan panas and catering lends the menu a sense of grounded familiarity. Her approach avoids the superficiality that often creeps into “hotel-style” Ramadan buffets. Instead, the dishes feel real, as though drawn from lived experience rather than typical recipes.

The hidang-style lineup brings together comforting staples — Daging Masak Hitam, Tenggiri Asam Pedas Bunga Kantan, Udang Sambal Petai, Ayam Goreng Kerabu Mangga Thai, and Sotong Bakar Perchik — each one carrying its own spice, aroma and homestyle familiarity. Among them, the Daging Masak Hitam and Sotong Bakar Perchik stood out as our clear favourites, the former being deeply caramelised and richly layered, while the latter offered a smoky, coconut-perchik taste that lingered long after the meal.

With ghee rice and steamed rice anchoring the meal, the table feels unmistakably like a Ramadan spread, even within a Western steakhouse setting.

A semi-buffet that balances familiarity and identity

The semi-buffet component extends the experience without overwhelming it. Traditional Ramadan favourites such as kerabu, soto ayam berempah, satay, passembur, lemang, ketupat, and rendang appear not as filler but as thoughtful extensions of the hidang dishes.

At the same time, Smith & Wollensky weaves in its well-known signatures, including its seafood-on-ice selection, alongside a robust salad and sides bar. Rather than attempting to be exhaustive, the buffet feels curated, finding a middle ground between the restaurant’s Western identity and Malaysia’s diverse palate.

Western classics meet festive comfort

The dessert spread continues this duality. The restaurant’s familiar Apple Pie, Cheesecake, and Chocolate Cake provide the rich, indulgent endings one might expect from an American steakhouse, while an array of Malay and Nyonya kuih, bubur manisan, kurma and fresh fruit offers a gentler, more nostalgic finish.

It’s a range wide enough to satisfy diners who crave decadence as well as those who prefer something light after a long day of fasting.

Another set menu for those looking for variety

Aside from the main ‘7.29PM’ lineup, Smith & Wollensky KL is also offering another set menu that comes with a different rotation of hidang dishes. This version leans even more into familiar comfort food, starting with both Nasi Hujan Panas and steamed rice to anchor the table.

The selection includes hearty favourites like Daging Salai Masak Lemak, Ayam Berlado, and Rendang Udang, each bringing its own style of heat and richness. There’s also Sotong Kam Heong, Sweet & Sour Fish, and vegetable sides like Kacang Panjang Goreng Udang and Sambal Tempeh Ikan Bilis to round everything out.

Our verdict

Priced at RM269 per person, the ‘7.29PM’ Ramadan preview definitely sits on the premium end, but what you’re paying for isn’t a massive buffet, it’s a clear, focused concept.

The Swinging Tomahawk brings the drama you’d expect from Smith & Wollensky, while Chef Fatin’s hidang dishes give the meal a solid Malaysian backbone.

Overall, it’s a Ramadan spread that feels indulgent without going over the top, and thoughtfully put together without trying too hard. It stays true to the restaurant’s style while still capturing the spirit of berbuka. More importantly, it’s a meal built for sharing, making it as much about the people at the table as the food itself.
