A senior police officer involved in the accident that killed a 17-year-old teenager nearly three years ago has escaped the death penalty after pleading guilty to an amended charge in court.

Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, 47, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamri at the junction of Jalan Taman Jati 1 and Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jati, between 11:45 AM and 12:32 PM on 15 December 2023.

He was initially charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. However, the charge was later amended to Section 304(b) of the Penal Code after the court found a prima facie case of causing death without intent.

Upon conviction, Section 304(b) carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet sentenced Nazri to seven years and six months in prison. He was also ordered to pay RM50,000 in compensation to the victim's father.

The prison sentence will take effect from the date of Nazri's arrest on 15 December 2023.

“My family and I are still struggling to come to terms with the fact that the son we raised with so much love is gone forever.”

The court proceedings were attended by the victim's father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 58, along with two other family members.

According to Zamrie, the tragedy has left a deep and lasting impact on his family, robbing them not only of a beloved son but also of the future they had hoped to share with him.

“I know that no sentence imposed by the court can bring my son back to us,” he said, as quoted by Harian Metro.

In his victim impact statement, Zamrie said his late son was still young and had a bright future ahead of him. Instead of watching him grow up, pursue his ambitions and build a future with his loved ones, all those hopes and dreams were cut short by the tragedy.

“I sincerely hope this case receives the attention it deserves and that the loss of a young life is never taken lightly."

“I hope this tragedy serves as a lesson to everyone about how precious life is, and the importance of acting responsibly and taking care not to endanger others," he shared.
