TLDR

  • Two individuals in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, were caught on CCTV dumping three large bags of rubbish by the roadside and were instructed to pick them up again by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).
  • MBSA’s swift action drew praise from netizens, who hope the same approach will be implemented nationwide to maintain cleanliness.
  • Since January, those caught littering in Kuala Lumpur can be fined up to RM2,000 and may be required to perform more than 12 hours of community service as punishment.

We’ve all probably seen it before, someone casually throwing rubbish by the roadside as if it’s someone else’s responsibility to clean it up later. While littering remains a frustratingly common sight in many places, it’s rare to actually see someone being held accountable for it on the spot.

But that’s exactly what happened to two individuals who were caught on CCTV throwing rubbish by the roadside.

In a post on X, the incident is believed to have occurred in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam. The video begins with two men exiting a black car before throwing not one, but three large bags of rubbish by the roadside, which was already heavily littered.

Unfortunately for them, their irresponsible actions were caught on CCTV by Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), which was monitoring the area.

The two litterbugs were then reprimanded by a voice over the CCTV for dumping the garbage and were even told to pick it up.

“You are prohibited from dumping rubbish here. You may be prosecuted. Please pick up your rubbish immediately. We have been monitoring your movements,” the announcement said.

Initially, the men were reluctant to pick up the rubbish they had thrown, however, after multiple reminders, one of them eventually picked up all three bags and placed them back into the boot of their car.

“We should definitely do this everywhere”

The video has since attracted attention from social media users, who applauded MBSA officers for their swift action and condemned the litterbugs.

“This is such a great idea. Please implement the same approach in other districts, villages, and states across the country, then maybe Malaysia can be as clean as Singapore.”

One user said, “The announcement voice is so soft. We should be more stern with people like this. Littering is such a disgrace!”

Another commented, “Maybe next time, the announcement could inform the litterbugs that their actions are being recorded. If they still refuse to pick up their rubbish, the video should be shared online.”
