TLDR
- A group of residents in Balakong has come under fire after a video of them waking people up for sahur using drums and loudspeakers went viral on social media.
- Ustaz Nasrullah stressed that sahur is a sunnah practice and not obligatory, and reminded the public not to disturb others, as Malaysia is a multiracial country.
- Netizens expressed their dissatisfaction, saying the act disrupted the peace—especially for mothers and young children—and emphasised that such a practice is not suitable for Malaysian society.
As Ramadan enters its second week, a group of residents in Balakong recently sparked criticism among Malaysians after a video of them waking people up for sahur was shared online.
In the video, several individuals can be seen marching through the street while carrying a large makeshift drum made from a blue container, along with speakers. One man can also be seen singing into a microphone as a way to wake up other residents

“Not everyone in our country is able to fast."
While many Malaysians voiced their disagreement over the incident, one Muslim preacher has also shared his opinion.
In a video, the preacher, identified as Nasrullah, expressed hope that similar incidents would not happen again, saying that such acts are not part of Malaysian culture.
“Not everyone in our country is able to fast. Some people are exempted, like those who have just given birth or women on their period. Some have small children who are asleep, so by doing so, we will be disturbing these people."
“Additionally, Malaysia is a multiracial country. Some non-Muslims might also be disturbed by this, and it could make them hate Islam, even though our religion never encourages such actions,” he said.

Nasrullah further reminded viewers that sahur is a sunnah practice, recommended but not obligatory, so there is no need to wake people up in such a manner.
“People these days have their own alarm clocks or phones. Furthermore, disturbing neighbours is considered haram (forbidden in Islam).”
Netizens slam the group
Netizens soon flooded the comment section with their reactions and thoughts.
One commenter wrote, “Which culture is this? Malaysians don’t do this. Our country has more than one race, so please respect others. You don’t have to do this. Don’t bring other cultures into our country.”

Another user added, “This is the thing I hate the most. Being noisy so early in the morning also wakes up babies from their sleep. Mothers who have to prepare food for sahur now have to deal with crying babies. Do you think we just started fasting this year that you feel the need to wake everyone up? We know how to wake ourselves.”

Tolong Jangan buat macam ni. Ada yang non-Muslim nak tido, ada budak-budak nak tido. Merosakkan imej agama Islam. pic.twitter.com/3llqrqCaSx
