Suspicious Group Spotted Near LRT Jelatek Before Dawn, Raises Cable Theft Concerns

A viral video showing several individuals carrying out suspicious activities near the LRT Jelatek station in Kuala Lumpur during the early hours of the morning has sparked concerns over a possible cable theft incident.

The video, shared by Threads user @kyle_era, was recorded while the azan was being heard in the background. It showed a group of individuals gathered near a manhole, accompanied by two cars and a motorcycle. Some of the individuals were also seen wearing face masks, raising questions among social media users about the nature of the activity.

In the post, the user expressed concern over what appeared to be unusual activity taking place before dawn.

"Something crazy happened this morning. I think the vehicle registration numbers might even be fake," the user claimed.

The footage quickly gained traction online, with many questioning whether the group was involved in cable-related work or if criminal activity might have been taking place.

While there has been no official confirmation that a theft occurred, the video has fuelled public concern over the growing number of cable theft cases reported across the country.

Netizens voice concerns

Many users who commented on the post claimed cable theft syndicates have become increasingly bold, allegedly operating in public without fear of being caught.

Others urged members of the public to immediately contact the police if they witness suspicious activities involving utility infrastructure.

Some users also noted that the tools and methods used to access the manhole appeared professional, leading to speculation that those involved may possess technical knowledge or prior experience handling cable installations.

Cable theft has previously disrupted rail services

The concerns raised by the viral video come amid a series of cable theft incidents that have affected Malaysia's rail network in recent years.

In March 2026, cable theft near Damansara Damai station caused major disruptions to services on the MRT Putrajaya Line after power cables were reportedly cut and stolen, affecting train operations and resulting in repair works being carried out by Rapid Rail.

More recently, Rapid KL investigated a suspected cable theft incident after a grounding cable from an MRT viaduct reportedly fell onto a roadway between Sri Raya and Bandar Tun Hussein Onn stations, damaging several vehicles and injuring a motorcyclist. Initial inspections suggested the cable had been cut.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the incident captured near LRT Jelatek is linked to any criminal activity and authorities have also yet to confirm whether any cable theft report was lodged in connection with the incident.
