The Energy Gel in the HYROX Starter Pack, Reviewed by Someone Afraid of Wall Balls

IMG 5590

There are two types of people during HYROX race week.

The first type has a plan. They have tapered, packed their bags, eaten proper meals, tested their shoes, and somehow look calm in a way that feels suspicious.

The second type is asking questions at the gym like: "Should I eat more rice?" "Do I need a gel?" and "When am I supposed to take it?" Both types are probably nervous.

With HYROX Jakarta coming up, a lot of the final-week conversation has shifted away from training and towards food. Which makes sense. The hard work is mostly done by now. Nobody is suddenly becoming a sled-push monster a few days before the race. At this stage, the goal is simply not to ruin things.

That usually means sleeping properly, eating familiar carbs, drinking enough water, tapering like an adult, and not introducing your stomach to a brand-new personality on race day.

Somewhere in the middle of that perfectly normal race-week panic, energy gels start to sound tempting.

They are small. They are easy to pack. They look like the kind of thing serious people use. And if you have ever watched someone casually pull one out of a race bag, you will understand how quickly it can make you question your own preparation.

Don't copy someone else's race bag

This is how race week gets you.

You start the week thinking you are a fairly reasonable person. Then someone mentions carb-loading. Someone else says they are bringing gels. Someone has a pacing plan. Someone has packed their shoes in a separate compartment, which suddenly feels like a level of adulthood you have not yet reached.

And then there you are, staring at a tiny sachet of carbs as if it might know something you don't.

That is probably where gels sit in the HYROX conversation. Not as famous as shoes. Not as exciting as watches. Not as heavily discussed as whether your legs will survive the sled push. But still there, quietly making first-timers wonder if they are missing something.

For anyone who has only experienced HYROX through Instagram Stories, the race is essentially 1km of running followed by a workout station, repeated eight times. By the end, you will have covered 8km and worked through stations such as the sled push, sled pull, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.

So yes, fuel becomes part of the conversation.

The review

Useful if it already works for you. Not compulsory if your normal routine is fine. Definitely not a brand-new race-day experiment.

An energy gel is basically quick carbohydrates in a small sachet. That is the review, really.

It is not glamorous. It will not give you a new personality. It will not make wall balls suddenly feel polite. It is simply a convenient source of fuel that some racers like because it is easy to carry and easy to consume. Which is useful, but not essential.

If you already use gels during training, packing one may make sense. If your usual food routine works well, you may not need one. And if you have never tried a gel before, race day is not the time to find out whether your stomach enjoys surprises.

The best gel is not the one your fittest friend uses. It is the one your body already recognizes.

Race-day rule

If a gel is part of your plan, carry it from the start. Do not rely on someone passing you fuel mid-race.

There is also a practical rule worth knowing. According to HYROX APAC, athletes may carry water or energy gels, but only if they bring them at the start of the race. Racers also cannot accept drinks or nutrition from spectators during the event. And that is probably the most honest way to look at it.

A gel can support a race-week plan. It cannot become the plan.

It will not fix poor sleep. It will not fix skipping breakfast. It will not fix starting too fast because, for one dangerous minute, you convinced yourself that you had more cardio than you actually do.

So, should you pack an energy gel for HYROX?

If gels already work for you, yes, it makes sense. If your usual food routine works fine, maybe not.

And if you are only considering one because everyone else seems to have one, your banana can keep its job.

For those who already use gels in training and know they sit well, SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel is one option available in Malaysia.
