Latif Romly Wins Gold, Delivers Malaysia’s 5th Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Malaysia has just bagged its fifth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow thanks to Paralympic athlete Datuk Abdul Latif Romly.

Despite the heavy rain, the 29-year-old two-time Paralympic champion managed to jump 7.17 metres on his third attempt. The achievement in the men's long jump T20 (intellectual disability) event subsequently completed the national contingent's five-gold-medal target for the Games.

More cheers followed as fellow Malaysian athlete Eljoe Gotuoh, 22, managed to snag the bronze medal in the same event with a 6.51-metre jump.

Meanwhile, the silver medal was awarded to Canadian athlete Noah Vucsics, who recorded a jump of 6.66 metres.

While Latif's achievement was cause for celebration, the para athlete was denied a chance to break his own world record.

In a report by NST, Latif had previously declared his intention to break his world record of 7.67 metres. However, due to the rain and cold conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, he had no choice but to change his approach.

“I indeed wanted to break the world record, but the weather conditions were unfavourable, and it was raining, so it was quite tough to do it. If the weather is too cold, it really is hard."

Aside from Latif, Malaysia has already bagged four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. The medals were won by weightlifters Aniq Kasdan in the men's 60kg category, Aznil Bidin (65kg), Erry Hidayat (79kg), and Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg).
