Chris Martin Confirms Coldplay Plans to Retire After Their 12th Album
Coldplay is one of the biggest bands on the planet and among the best-selling music acts of all time, with over 100 million albums sold worldwide. Their popularity naturally includes Malaysian fans, with over 81,000 concertgoers attending their tour earlier this year, making it the most attended concert of their career.
However, all good things must end, and frontman Chris Martin has officially announced their planned retirement, as reported by NBC News. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Martin confirmed that the band will retire after releasing their 12th studio album.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so, where we could be coasting, we're trying to improve,” said Martin.
“Yeah, I promise,” he stated, according to The Financial Express. “Less is more…It’s really important that we have that limit.”
Martin said the decision was inspired by some of the band’s biggest influences. “There are only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles' albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes.”
Martin elaborated, “Having that limit means that the quality control is high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”
He also hinted at allowing the band members to explore pursuits outside of the band, saying, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their lives for themselves.”
Way back in 2021, Martin already revealed that Coldplay would release their final album in 2025. He also suggested that while they would remain together, they would likely focus on touring rather than creating new material. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”
However, fans can still look forward to seeing the band members around. Martin said he will likely continue to make new music after the band retires, as he loves doing so. The Englishman said it could involve side projects with his bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion.
However, fans still have three more albums to look forward to, including their 10th album, ‘Moon Music, ’ which comes out on 4 October. It is the sequel to From Earth with Love (2021) on their Music of the Spheres project. Dubbed one of the most anticipated albums of the year, the ten-track album features guest appearances by Jon Hopkins, Burna Boy, Little Simz, Elyanna, Tini, and Ayra Starr.
