M’sian Father With Cancer Leaves Hospital​‌ to Continue Selling Tau Fu Fah to Support His Family

Life doesn’t stop when you’re unwell, especially when your family depends on you.

That is exactly the case for one Malaysian father who continues to work hard despite being diagnosed with cancer, all to provide for his family.

The story of the man, simply known as Ah Chong, was shared by local social activist Uncle Kentang, whose real name is Kuan Chee Heng.

In a Facebook post, Kuan shared how Ah Chong discharged himself from the hospital despite his condition because he needed to continue working to support his family.

It is understood that Ah Chong’s wife and 13-year-old son live with mental health conditions. He also has two other children, aged 18 and 20.

According to the post, Ah Chong is weak and has been admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL). He had contacted Uncle Kentang for advice on what he should do.

“He has a mentally ill wife and son at home. His two other kids have just turned 18 and 20. One of them works as a waiter, and his entire salary goes towards supporting the family. Yet, it’s still not enough.”

Eventually, Ah Chong decided to leave the hospital at his own risk (AOR) so he could continue selling bread, tau fu fah and soybean milk to afford the rent.

Plea for help

Uncle Kentang added that doctors have yet to ask Ah Chong to return to the hospital for a Computed Tomography (CT) scan to learn more about his cancer. However, he may have to wait several months to receive the scan at a government hospital.

Following this, Uncle Kentang decided to bring Ah Chong to Columbia Hospital for the scan he needs, which is estimated to cost RM1,500 or more.

“He has to wait months for the scan at a government hospital, and every day he worries whether the cancer has worsened. Why I want to push for an early diagnosis of the cancer stage is because people depend on him. He needs to know the stage of his cancer so he can plan ahead."

Besides donating to Uncle Kentang’s charity, Pertubuhan Amal Uncle Kentang Malaysia, to help Ah Chong afford the scan, the social activist also called on the public to support his business.

Below is Ah Chong’s daily work schedule:

• He wakes up as early as 1:30 AM and drives his lorry to USJ, Subang Jaya, to collect supplies.
• By 5 AM, he sets up his stall near Menara TRX, where he remains open for business until 10 AM.
• He later moves his business to Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, where he works from 11 AM to 5 PM before reaching home well after 7 PM.
