Nasi Kandar Chain Ordered to Pay RM200K Over Illegal Unauthorised Use of Astro Content

As reported by Astro Awani, a popular nasi kandar chain was ordered to pay RM221,773.20 to an Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd subsidiary for the unauthorised use of Astro’s pay-TV broadcasts at multiple locations.

Thaqwa (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd had illegally extended the use of its subscriptions at two restaurants to its other eight restaurants. They did this using decoder boxes, Astro smart cards, and other equipment to access and display Astro content.

Thaqwa and Astro reached a settlement through a consent judgement at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, which requires the former to pay Measat Broadcast Systems Sdn Bhd over RM200,000. Thaqwa also agreed to use their Astro subscription solely at the authorised locations and to respect Astro’s copyright and intellectual property rights.

Astro said these cases highlighted its ongoing efforts to combat digital piracy and ensure that businesses and individuals respect the terms of their subscription agreements. It also helps to keep the industry alive and thriving and allows new content and ideas to flourish. With Astro taking strong legal steps and protecting intellectual property, this also ensures that creators and artists are paid fairly for their work.

In February, a 22-year-old man in Ipoh was fined RM10,000 after pleading guilty to selling an Android box preloaded with unauthorised Astro content, which had been discovered during a raid.
