It was only in 2004 that Mercedes-Benz Malaysia cut the ribbon and officiated the opening if the German carmaker’s new assembly plant in Pekan, Pahang. 15 years on, the same plant has just assembled and rolled off its 100,00th Mercedes-Benz vehicle, which may or may not be the AMG C 43 pictured here. Nevertheless, it is a significant achievement for any car company.

In that time, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has put together C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLC and GLC Coupe as well as each model’s corresponding hybrid and performance variants. Since 2004, investments worth more than RM300,000,000 has been injected into the plant that has upgraded various areas across the years.

Recent upgrades include the new assembly lines, new assembly jigs to improve worker ergonomics and precision. The enhancements also prepare the plant for future Mercedes-Benz vehicles to be assembled here.

Additionally, the assembly plant now has the capability to put together left-hand drive and right-hand drive vehicles on the same production line. In fact, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has started assembling LHD C-Class cars that are bound for the Philippines and will start heading north soon.

The assembly plant, which sits on an 895,000 square-metres of land, now has a built-up area of 339,000 square-metres. The plant employs approximately 1,300 Malaysians.

President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Dr. Claus Weidner said “As the leading premium brand, Mercedes-Benz is committed to continuously redefine the mobility landscape of Malaysia. We achieve the highest engineering standards in producing locally assembled vehicles, without compromising on the safety, technology, design or quality. Today marks the roll-out of our 100,000th locally assembled vehicle, testifying a growing trust and demand of Malaysian’s in Mercedes-Benz products”.

“In support of the country’s international trade industry within the SEA region, we will begin exports this year. The export of our best-selling limousine, the C-Class, to the Philippines allows us to extend our expertise and enhance Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s brand image regionally.
