The Takata airbag scandal is far from over. In fact, though things may seem to have dwindled down a little it’s probably a case of being overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Honda Malaysia has just issued a further recall for an additional 2,784 units of the 1999 Accord (sixth-generation) and 2000 CR-V (first-generation).

However, these 1,380 units of the Accord and 1,404 units of the CR-V aren’t part of the main Takata airbag scandal that is a different defect altogether. Though these units of the Accord and CR-V will need their Takata driver’s side airbags inspected and replaced if necessary, they’re part of the non-azide driver airbag inflator (NADI) recall.

Completely different from the defective Takata airbag inflator scandal, this recall involves the possible manufacturing without the appropriate seals that would allow air and moisture to seep into the airbags. The result is degradation of the propellant.

Therefore, in the unfortunate event of a crash, the airbag could deploy too slowly or with accelerated force. Both aren’t ideal and could result in serious injuries or death for the occupant.

Globally, there have been unintentional deployment of the airbags although Honda Malaysia states that no cases as a result of this defect have been reported here.

As with all Takata related recalls, Honda Malaysia will inform customers via notification letters regarding the recall alongside the procedures for inspection and replacement if necessary. Owners of the affected models are urged to contact any authorised Honda dealers for an appointment to replace the inflators.

If you’re aware of someone who owns the two models mentioned above, do inform them to contact an authorised Honda dealer to have the inflators replaced.

All costs with regards to the replacement of the inflator will be borne by Honda Malaysia.

Customers will be required to comply with all government-mandated standard operating procedures (SOPs) during their time at the dealership.

If you’re unsure your vehicle’s status under the recall, you can call Honda Malaysia’s toll-free number at 1-800-88-2020 or visit the official recall website to ascertain the status.
