Honda believes that younger buyers are a core component of Civic buyers. They’re not wrong. The current turbocharged Civic FC has been a shot in the arm for ricers, force-inducting their boy racer dreams on the streets with Type-R body kits and ECU tuning to bring out the most from their regular Civics.

That buying philosophy won’t be changing for the new, next-generation Civic. In fact, Honda will be unveiling a prototype of the new Civic on streaming platform Twitch on 17 November in a bid to get to penetrate its younger buying demographic.

Teased today, the new Civic takes a step back from the bold, in-your-face design of the current generation. It’s a little more subdued, ditching the crab-leg taillights for the more conventional. If anything, it leaves the current Civic and Accord language in the rear-view mirror and has taken a leaf out of the new City.

Some might argue that goes against the grain in appealing to its younger demographic; adopting a more matured design, but the looks itself is just a small part of the equation. More importantly, will it drive like a Civic and open the VTEC in the pants of boy racers?

That’s the real acid test.
