While the current Honda Civic continues to trounce the opposition here and globally, Honda’s not resting on its laurels and has already given us the new 11th-generation Civic in sedan form. That’ll be coming to our shores soon but if you’re dreaming of a hatchback Civic, there’s one but you probably can’t have it in Malaysia.

Honda loves to tantalise us with teasers of its cars and the hatchback body will soon debut to join the sedan. A silhouette of the Civic hatchback was posted online with nothing except a reveal date; 24 June 2021.

The photo shows a side profile with a fastback silhouette very much in the spirit of the current Civic hatchback body style sold exclusively here as the Civic Type-R. The regular Civic here can only be had with the sedan tail.

That said, once again most of the cosmetic changes will be in the rear with the shorter rump. Expect other design cues on the sedan to carry over lock, stock and barrel, including the sleeker front and simpler side fascia for a less aggressive rear over the outgoing model.

From the photo you can see the roof extending a little to the rear and the brightened image also reveals the fuel tank lid; an important design cue on all cars so be grateful we managed to dig it out for you.

For now, the Civic hatchback will be making its way to the American market with the same engine options as the sedan. That means the same 1.5-litre turbo i-VTEC inline-four with a bump in power to 180hp/240Nm of torque and the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated i-VTEC inline-four with 158hp/187Nm of torque.

As per the current car as well, a CVT and six-speed manual will be available.

If you’ve been dreaming of a Civic hatchback here in Malaysia, please continue to do so. It’s unlikely we’ll get the hatch for regular trims, that usually being reserved for the big-boy Type-R version that we should be getting.
