For some, giving up RM1.4million for an AMG G63 SUV remains an unreachable dream, even if the said person decides to give up Wagyu for Angus. Not that forking out RM999,888 for a Mercedes-Benz G 350 d makes it easier to digest, but it does make owning a G-Wagen an attainable dream for some.
Unlike the AMG G-Wagen, the Mercedes-Benz G 350 d is powered by a new OM 656 diesel engine. This inline-6 powerplant features stepped-bowl combustion process, two-stage exhaust turbocharging, CAMTRONIC variable valve timing and NANOSLIDE cylinder wall coating. The result is a quieter diesel engine that Mercedes-Benz says makes the 8.9 to 8.7 litres per 100km possible.
The engine mounts are actively controlled to reduce noises. At low speeds, the dampers become soft enough to soak up the transfer of torsional vibrations to the ladder-type frame. At higher speeds, the engine mounts become stiffer to enhance vibrational comfort and driving dynamics.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine is powerful, delivering 286hp and 600Nm between 1,200rpm and 3,200rpm. A nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission transfers power to all four wheels and allows the SUV to hit 100kph from zero in 7.4 seconds, and up to a top speed of 199kph.
The 9G-TRONIC, with its torque converter, is adaptable to the G-Wagen’s off-roading capability synonymous with the range. Through software, the G 350 d has shorter shifts and response times. The wide transmission ratio hushes the drive and elevates comfort at low engine speeds. The tweaks are felt in first gear when the accelerator kicks up the engine quicker. Power is divided to 40 per cent to the front and 60 per cent to the rear for a permanent all-wheel drive.
Seen here is the G 350 d wearing AMG Night Package that includes the 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, darkened indicators, reversing lamps and headlamps. The radiator grille louvres and spare wheel ring, as well as the trim elements in the bumper painted in obsidian black, are part of the package.
Besides, the ‘G’ is also equipped with the Stainless Steel Package. The running boards, spare wheel cover with 3D Mercedes star in obsidian black, door sills, load sills guard are all part of the package.
The interior is luxurious enough to make you forget the G 350 d is a capable off-roader. High-quality materials don the interior, and the exclusive colours express individuality. The roof lining in black DINAMICA microfibre and frameless inside rearview mirror is courtesy of the Exclusive interior package.
As with all modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the G-Class features active safety systems. With the Driving Assistance Package, the G 350 d is equipped with the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Blind Spot Assist.
Although the Mercedes-Benz G 350 d is set up to be a luxury vehicle, the SUV has not lost any of its off-roading talents. It will climb 45-degree inclines, track through thick mud and wade in waters up to 700mm depth. But if you’ve just spent a million Ringgit on a G-Wagen, would be taking it into the bushes? We suspect your answer might be a firm 'are you mad!'.
