Engine oils have gone from simple engine lubricants to a concoction of formulas and additives that would put any cocktail to shame. And it becomes even more complicated when the fuel company throws in letters and numbers to make the product seem sophisticated when it really isn’t. Shell Malaysia’s latest engine oils do away with the jargon in favour of simplicity.

New to the range of Shell’s fully synthetic engine oils are Power and Protect. Each engine oil aims to do what it exactly says on the label, making it easier to pick the best lubricant for your vehicle.

To drill down further, Shell Helix Power focuses its additives on extracting more horses from your engine and make acceleration smoother. This is recommended for drivers who prefer to drive with more spirit, so you can guess which cars this oil is formulated for. Shell Helix Power is priced at RM280 for a four-litre pack.

As for Shell Helix Protect, its additives are blended to clean engine components. This oil is recommended for cars that spend more time behind start-stop traffic, making it the best choice for your daily drive. Shell Helix Protect is priced at RM240 for a four-litre pack.

The low viscosity of both fully synthetic engine oils is said to flow faster to coat moving engine parts at start-up. Shell claims that this will reduce engine wear during cold starts, improve fuel economy and lower carbon emissions. It could also minimise maintenance costs because you don’t need to drain engine oil frequently.

To wrap it on in a bow-tied nutshell, you use Shell Helix Power when you want more power, and Shell Helix Protect when you want more protection for your engine. Simple.
