Aside from the MCU and maybe Polis Evo, 2015 may not be the best year for movie buffs. Then along came Filosofi Kopi, a humble, coming-of-age film that changed the Indonesian filmscape in its own unique capacity.

Starring Chicco Jerikho (Ben) and Rio Dewanto (Jody), Filosofi Kopi explored the story of two baristas who wanted to brew the best coffee around. The response for the first movie was so impressive that the production house had to give it a sequel, this time even getting Indonesian indie heartthrobs Fourtwnty on board.

History aside, your favourite caffeine brothers are back! Nope, not to expand their coffee empire a la Kopi Kenangan, but to feature in their own action movie entitled ‘Ben & Jody’. Fuyo!

After leaving Filosofi Kopi, Ben decided to return to his hometown and protested against illegal loggers threatening the people of his village. His actions attracted the attention of Tubir (Yayan Ruhian), the leader of the loggers group. Now in grave danger, it is up to Jody to save his friend from Tubir and his gang of loggers.

Interestingly, the Filosofi Kopi franchise started as an indie rom-com flick with a cult following among coffee enthusiasts and indie rock kids. ‘Ben & Jody’ looks set to redirect and pivot them away from their original direction, reinventing everything we knew about these two characters together with their world.

Making things interesting is the inclusion of Yayan Ruhian, known for his role in The Raid films and also a cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Who would’ve thought the lovely baristas we all fell in love with in the first two Filosofi Kopi movies will be going head to head with a silat master like Yayan?

Another good reason to be excited is seeing Ari Lesmana’s name on the cast sheet. Taking the role of Gele, Ari Lesmana’s first onscreen debut will definitely make Fourtwnty fans excited in seeing him step out of his Zona Nyaman. Get it?

The film ‘Ben & Jody’ is now available on Astro First channel 480 from now until 16 June and with only RM15, you get to watch the film for 48 hours!
