On 24 February, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran brought his +=÷× Tour (The Mathematics Tour) to the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, and played to a sold-out crowd with hits like ‘Shape of You’ and even ended the show with a fireworks display.

The Grammy-award-winning singer has been soaking in the sights while touring on the Asian leg of his international tour including hopping on a tuk-tuk in Bangkok.

In Malaysia, he took the time to enjoy local experiences including some which most tourists don’t get to partake in.

Read on to see what Ed got up to in Malaysia.

Playing Badminton with a National Player

Badminton is easily the favourite sport of most Malaysians and Ed actually tried it out with 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist Chan Peng Soon, who consistently ranks among the top 10 mixed doubles pair in the world with Goh Liu Ying. Ed donned a Malaysian jersey and played together with influencers Jinnyboy and Jobroseph three against one (Peng Soon).

Peng Soon told NST, “It was a real experience for me because Ed is such a nice guy. "When I got called up, I thought this was such a nice way to promote the sport and also our country. If you watch his video, Ed actually mentions that Malaysians love badminton. We played for about an hour and then exchanged jerseys. I gave him my CPS Badminton Academy jersey, and he gave me one of his favourite English football club, Ipswich Town.”

Batik Painting

A few lucky Sheerios (Ed’s fandom name) who are also Ipswich Town F.C. supporters even got to join Ed for a batik painting session. This included a senior fan who happily chatted with Ed about becoming a fan after the singer sponsored Ipswich Town, putting his tour logo on their first-team shirts.

Ed made a colourful butterfly-themed painting and said he’d be putting it up at his pub back home.

Visiting an Indian Barber

When you’re on vacation, you’re probably too busy soaking in the sights to visit a hairstylist, but Ed had an authentic Malaysian experience by visiting a barber for a shave. Ed mentioned that he had never tried a traditional razor shave, and this local Indian barbershop in particular had been around since 1937! He said that it was the cleanest shave he’d ever had afterwards.

Buying Flowers

Just down the street from the barber’s, he bought some flowers for his friend and manager. What a sweetheart!

Partaking in Yee Sang

Ed was in town during the CNY season, with his concert taking place on the last day of CNY, Chap Goh Meh. Yee Sang, or the Prosperity Toss is believed to originate in Malaysia, and Jinnyboy shared the significance of the tradition.
