It’s coming to the end of November folks, and with it, the end of 2018. It’s been an eventful year to say the least, and definitely one of the best years so far as far as local music quality goes. This week, we’ve got another peek into the local scene with 5 more tracks to add to your regular ear candy rotation, and whether you want some rock or hip-hop, trust that Malaysia’s got you covered.

Seven Collar T-Shirt - 'Black Rain'

In the aftermath of The Great Battle in 2013, the enigmatic lads of Seven Collar T-Shirt returned to their adult lives, with nary a peep about a new single or shows to catch the legendary group in action. All that came to a screeching halt a few weeks ago, when SCTS dropped their brand new alt-rock banger ‘Black Rain’ on YouTube. The mid-tempo, grinding nature of the riffs mix with well-paced vocal work and steady drums, makes this one of the more unique tracks to receive the music video treatment, but SCTS capture the ennui of watching and waiting for things to fall apart in a way only they can. Perfect for rainy afternoons.

NYK - 'Pretty Burn'

NYK is back with more smooth R&B tinged electronica for your viewing pleasure, and this time, he’s got a perfect song for letting go of your FWB. ‘Pretty Burn’ currently sits at the number 2 spot on HITZ.fm’s MET10 Charts, and if you’ve been wondering what that super chill song that's been playing on Sunday afternoons was, well... you've got your answer. NYK is undoubtedly one of Malaysia’s most popular and controversial artists, and he lives up to the hype with this number.

Sekumpulan Orang Gila - 'Hancur, Musnah'

Post-hardcore savants Sekumpulan Orang Gila (or SOG for short) wowed audiences all over Malaysia with their ambitious sophomore effort Bahtera back in 2014, an effort that featured some of the most nuanced commentary on the Malay experience seen in local music. With their 2018 effort, Dermaga, SOG have put forward yet another forward-thinking cut of music, proudly championing mother tongue and noble values while putting the lash to corruption and societal ills. ‘Hancur, Musnah’ is a perfect example of their ethos - defiant, rowdy, and a full exercise in rational thought. It’s not going to be the soundtrack for our football team like ‘Kitalah Juara’, but you can bet it’s on heavy rotation with metalheads nationwide.

Patriots - 'Hollow'

We return to the metal scene to take a look at one of the most exciting acts in recent years, Patriots, as they take their metalcore-meets-pop punk approach to new heights, having now put some big shows as well as a big collab with Indonesia’s Last! Goal Party behind them. ‘Hollow’ is Patriots at their best, bending heavy riffery to match up with infinitely catchy choruses, with the obligatory sick breakdown to get the moshpit moving crashing into the latter half of the song. Get your two-step on, this one will have you skanking in your bedroom.

#ThrowBackTrack

Altimet - 'Kalau Aku Kaya'

This week’s #throwbacktrack takes us to 2013 and the suburb of Mutiara Damansara courtesy of the Budak Flat himself, Altimet. This whimsical rumination on what you should actually do if you were rich is a much more hopeful take on wealth than is usually seen in rap, and makes for a wholesome twist on the genre’s stereotypical obsession with money. Now, how do I go about becoming Altimet’s neighbour? Got bills to pay, after all.
