Everyone had high hopes for the movie and Marvel did not disappoint us. Or did they?
Well, one thing that’s predominantly absent from the movie is two key Marvel superheroes that some people were expecting to show up: Hawkeye and Ant-Man.
Most of us knew what happened to Hawkeye (he probably wanted to stay home and spend more time with his family) but what about Ant-Man? Not much is known about his whereabouts, so we had to wait for the sequel to 'Ant-Man' to find out what really happened to him.
Rojak Daily was invited to a special early screening of 'Ant-Man and The Wasp' on Monday so here’s our little review about the movie.
#1 The Movie Should Be Renamed To “The Wasp and Ant-Man”
If you’ve seen both trailers of 'Ant-Man and The Wasp', you can see that Marvel is trying to sell the whole premise of this movie where The Wasp, or Hope van Dyne, is Ant-Man’s partner or “someone who will have his back.” Well, to be honest, after watching the whole movie, it felt like it was more of The Wasp featuring Ant-Man show.
Evangeline Lilly’s portrayal of The Wasp stood out more in the movie and this sequel actually revolves around the van Dyne family. They had one ultimate mission in this movie and Ant-Man’s role was to actually help them complete that goal.
Plus, can we just say The Wasp is such a badass and her suit’s way better than Ant-Man’s? Not only does she get wings and blasters, hers is also far more superior than Ant-Man’s. Let’s just say Ant-Man’s suit in this movie was kind of lopek.
#2 The Movie Will Address Ant-Man’s Absence In ‘Infinity War’
Ant-Man was team #CaptainAmerica in 'Civil War', and after the whole shebang with Team #IronMan, he was caught and was imprisoned. It was only in 'Ant-Man 2''s trailer that we found out he somehow got out of prison and was under house arrest.
In this movie, Ant-Man will address his absence from the multi-superhero movie of the decade and we will also get a glimpse of why The Wasp wasn’t invited to the 'Civil War' battle. We won’t tell you what exactly transpired between them, but they did talk about it more than once.
#3 The Post-Credit Scenes Will Give A Hint To ‘Avengers 4’
Guys, we cannot stress this enough: just like all the previous Marvel movies, there will be two post-credit scenes; one right after the animated credits, and another one after the long credit roll ends.
The first post-credit scene is essential to the next 'Avengers' movie and just a heads up, you need to be emotionally prepared for it too. The second one; not so much, it’s okay, if you miss it but please don't, because a Marvel movie isn't complete until you watch two post-credit scenes.
#4 The Villain Is Oh-So-Cool!
There’s a new villain in MCU town, and she’s a cool one. Ghost is not like any Marvel villains you’ve seen before; she has powers that we think even Thanos wishes he has before his got his hands on the Infinity Gauntlet.
She phases and wears a creepy white suit walking around like she’s some sort of powerful glitch. Not only can she walk through objects, she can walk through people as well! Her ability to go stealth mode or invisible is so great and unpredictable that it’d put Harry Potter’s Invinsibility Cloak to shame.
Actually, to be honest, if we were given a choice to pick which Marvel villain we would like to become for a day (excluding Thanos), we’d pick Ghost. Throughout the movie, we will learn some shocking dark details about Ghost, and the plot twist involving her is just the icing on the cake.
#5 Keep An Eye Out For Michelle Pfeiffer
In the first installation of 'Ant-Man', we learned that Hank Pym’s wife, Janet van Dyne, turned into a sub-atomic particle and was lost in the quantum realm. According to Hank, once she turns sub-atomic, chances of her coming back is, well, none.
Well, in one of 'Ant-Man and The Wasp'’s posters, we know that Michelle Pfeiffer will appear in the movie, and a quick Google search will confirm that she plays Janet van Dyne. But how will she appear in this movie? Will it be a flashback? Will it be some pre-recorded videos? Or maybe just photos? We’ll leave that for you to figure it out when you're in the cinema.
But one thing’s for sure: Michelle’s got to drop her skincare routine (and her make-up setting spray) because she looks so good for a 60-year-old. Teach us please, senpai!
#6 We Need More Michael Peña!
Admit it, Michael Peña was one of the best parts of 'Ant-Man'. If you've watched the first movie, you'll definitely know what we're talking about here.
This dude was the pinnacle of storytelling and should be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His passion and detail in storytelling made 'Ant-Man' all that more compelling.
However, in 'Ant-Man and The Wasp', Michael Peña did get a lot of screen time, but you'll be disappointed that he won't get a lot of story-telling moments. So please Marvel, we demand more Michael Peña story telling sessions in the next 'Ant-Man' movie (if there’s another one).
VERDICT
Although Ant-Man’s sequel has an interesting story line and plot, we felt that it fell a little short compared to its debut movie. There were some pretty good laughs but not as much as you’d expect. There were also several unnecessary lines or scenes that made it a little teeny-weeny draggy for some parts.
And just like 'Infinity War', we were annoyed that some cool parts shown in the trailer weren't in the actual movie.
Overall, it’s still a good movie jam-packed with both upsized and miniscule action and super cool tech from Hank Pym’s pocket which you can watch with your family.
If you’re really curious to know or want to predict what happens in the next 'Avengers' movie, 'Ant-Man and The Wasp' might be your key to it.
