Here’s Why There’s A Cheaper RM63 Annual Disney+Hotstar Subscription That’s Not Available In M’sia
On 1 June, two major events happened: 1) Malaysia officially goes under total lockdown until 14 June and 2) Disney+Hotstar is officially streaming in Malaysia.
While we Malaysians have been expecting a lockdown, what we didn't expect was for the launch of Disney+Hotstar to make headlines for a variety of reasons.
Cheaper alternatives spotted
Throughout the entire day, eager Malaysians were trying to activate their accounts, but they ran into some verification issues. You can read more about it here. While things seemed to have settle down regarding that issue, Disney+Hotstar was thrusted into the spotlight once again.
Eagle-eyed netizens spotted cheaper alternatives under the 'In-App Purchases' section on the app download page on the App Store.
That had netizens talking on the social media site, as both alternatives are relatively cheaper compared to the current plan that is being offered, which is RM54.90 for three months.DISNEY+ HOTSTAR MALAYSIA SCAM PENGGUNA?!Kenapa tak diberikan pilihan ni masa mula daftar sedangkan pricing ni ada dalam Apps Store? ? Ada orang nak subscribe n test sebulan dahulu, ada orang mcm aku nak berjimat subscribe setahun terus, kenapa launch day bagi satu option shj? pic.twitter.com/ehqdOCkXAL— #zhafvlog (@zhafvlog) June 1, 2021
Some basic mathematics would give you a sum of RM18.30 per month under the current plan, which is almost four times more expensive than the RM62.90 annual option (which comes up to around RM5.24 per month).
In fact, the single month subscription listed on the page only goes for RM11.90 per month.
So, what gives? Why can't we select the other two obviously cheaper options?
Inaccurate description in the app
To get to the bottom of the issue, we got in touch with a representative from Disney+Hotstar, and the person told us that the pricing listed in the 'In-App Purchases' section of the app is "inaccurate".The spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Rojak Daily that the two options listed in the App Store do not apply to the Malaysian market.

"The monthly and annual pricing reflected in the app is the pricing for Indonesia," the spokesperson told us.
For the time being, there are no plans for Disney+Hotstar to introduce other subscription options in Malaysia, but who knows, maybe there will be further down the road.
