But now, one film is set to shake things up in Hollywood by featuring Southeast Asian representation!
‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ tells the tale of Raya, a lone warrior who tracks down a legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land of Kumandra and its divided people.
The animated flick is set to premiere in 2021 and will star Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ star Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon.
And did you know that a fellow Malaysian - Adele Lim actually wrote the screenplay for this animated film? You can read about it here.
Disney recently dropped the official teaser trailer for ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ and fans are impressed by it!
Raya comes off as a badass, confident, strong warrior and to be perfectly honest, it looks much better than the 2020 ‘Mulan’, which was unfortunately did not live up to its animated predecessor.
Malaysians and other fellow Asians were happy to see the trailer and here’s what they said about the film:
we will support & love this movie bc the screenwriter is adele lim who is a malaysian! ??? https://t.co/69vSJ2ZeAp

Qui Nguyen & Adele Lim ? https://t.co/lTzYjrNnM7
Adele Lim went from writing the dub of Digimon during the Tamers season to now writing for a Disney animated movie.

I think the clothings are mix match inspired of numerous SEA cultures cus I’m seeing Thai & Laos Silk and Malay songket while the weapons are so inspired by the keris, sickle, and parang. Lemme know what other cultures you see ? https://t.co/YwUHksZY0q
