Mechamato Movie & One Cent Thief Win Best Movie and Best TV Series of 2022
If you’re into animations or if you have a five-year-old under your roof, you’ve probably heard of Mechamato. In the show, a Malay-speaking boy Amato teams up with a ‘mecha’ or a giant robot controlled by humans to protect their town from evildoers. Last year, the highly anticipated prequel movie to the series hit the theatres and it even made serious waves in Japan, winning the Anime Fan Award at the Tokyo Anime Awards Festival 2023.
While internationally GoT prequel House of the Dragon set social media abuzz, Malaysian production One Cent Thief was also a hit and was even named in NME’s Best Asian TV Shows List. The thriller was loosely based on ‘Jutawan Satu Sen’, a local crime that shook the country in the early 90s. The two Astro Shaw shows have now been announced as winners of the best movie and TV series of 2022.
They were chosen as part of a recent Instagram poll by Instagram page ‘Wayangpeople’ that focuses on user-generated reviews for Malaysian and international content. The page continues to grow with more than 10,000 followers currently, which includes a strong following from industry players.
In the fourth annual poll titled ‘Wayang Championship’, both Malaysian and international shows went head-to-head in a rating face-off. After weeks of accumulating votes from its followers, Mechamato was voted as the Winner for Best Movie of 2022 with a total of 81% of the votes. It beat out the likes of The Batman’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘RRR’, and ‘Tiga Janda Melawan Dunia’. It was the second animation to win the Wayang Championship after ‘Ejen Ali: the Movie’
One Cent Thief also emerged victor as the Winner for the Best TV Series of 2022. It won against other top shows such as ‘Hilang’, ‘Stranger Things S4’, ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’, and ‘Wednesday’). It accumulated 66% of the votes and is the second Astro Original series to win the championships after ‘Projek: Anchor SPM’.
