The finale is finally here and unlike some of the previous episodes, fans were not divided this time around. The conclusion to season 1 is widely praised as the best episode in the season, with plenty of intrigue, shock and suspense worthy of a finale. Let’s rundown some of the key moments in episode 10 that kept us at the edge of our seats.

Unintended consequences

While seemingly everyone is rushing head first into war preparations, we love Rhaenyra’s restraint (Rhaenys thinks so, too). Her desire to keep the realm peaceful is a reflection of her father’s rule. Even when everyone in the war room advised her to strike first, she remained cool-headed and adamant in her belief – but peace has its consequences, like the loss of her children.

Shortly after hearing of her father’s death from Rhaenys, Rhaenyra went into labour suddenly even though her baby was not of full term. Though the series does not hold back on its graphic depictions, we feel that the delivery and cremation of a stillborn child was too much for our gentle eyes. This hurt almost as much as Stannis Baratheon burning his sweet daughter at the stake. ONLY FOR HIM TO FAIL IN HIS CONQUEST.

Seriously, every time we think back on Game of Thrones we realise how much this show hates women. Anyway.

Power of dragons

The faceoff between Aemond and Lucerys at Storm’s End was a thrilling masterpiece. What we liked even more was the call back to what Viserys told Rhaenyra earlier in the season. As the cousins struggled to control their dragons, Viserys’ words echoed in the skies - that Targaryens having power over dragons is just an illusion.

Yes, Daemon is angry after finding out that Viserys never intended to name him heir, and remained convinced that dragons make kings, not dreams. But choking Rhaenyra was totally unnecessary!

New beginnings

One of the most satisfying moments is when Rhaenyra awakens her inner dragon after discovering what happened to Lucerys. No more peace and negotiations. The Queen looks like she’s ready to burn King’s Landing to the ground. What a perfect way to close out the season!

On the flip side, we expected a little more action for a season finale. After so much build up in the past episodes, we were secretly hoping to see a siege or at least the start of it. A calculated one, not an accidental act of war like what happened at Storm’s End.

Now that season 1 has come and gone, season 2 can’t come soon enough! All that’s left is to rewatch the series and see what we may have missed.
