You guys know 'Upin & Ipin', the adorable cartoon twins that kids for some reason can’t stop watching?

Well, if you didn't know who or what they are, trust us; you'll soon know...because an animated movie based on the characters is heading to the 2020 Oscars!

Yep, you heard us right: we finally have a Malaysian movie that's being considered for an Oscar award.

Bernama reported that the movie ‘Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal’, produced by Les' Copaque Production, has created history when it made the 2020 Oscars nomination list for the Best Animation Film category.

The film will be competing against 32 other films in the category, including 'Toy Story 4', How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World', 'The Secret Life of Pets 2', 'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part' and 'The Angry Birds Movie 2'.

According to the Academy Awards, the finalists for all categories will be announced on 13 January 2020, so we have to wait a couple of months more to see if 'Upin & Ipin' makes the cut.

Les' Copaque Production also took to their social media pages to share the good news:

"'Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal' is listed together with 32 international animation films for 2020 Oscar nomination.

"Thank you, Malaysians for the extraordinary support for the movie," the Facebook post read.

'Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal' is one of the highest grossing local animated films this year, as they raked in RM25 million at the local box office when it premiered in March, with over two million total viewers.

Heading to the Oscars!
The animation film is about an adventure of Upin and Ipin that features characters from the other old Malay tales such as Mat Jenin, Raja Bersiong, Nakhoda Ragam and SiTanggang.

The film recently was awarded the Best Film Story in the 2019 International Animation Film Festival (Animaze) in Montreal, Canada.

Way to go, 'Upin and Ipin' team! We wish you all the best!
