The past few months or so, the most commonly asked question among Malaysians besides "When can we travel interstate again ah?" is, no doubt, this: "When is Disney+ launching in Malaysia?".

While we do not have a concrete date or confirmation yet, we, however, do believe that the highly-anticipated streaming service is coming sooner than expected.

Let us explain.

Timeline of Disney+'s arrival

The boss of Disney+ in Southeast Asia.
Rumours of Disney+'s arrival in Malaysia started as early as November 2020, when fellow Malaysian Ahmad Izham Omar was appointed the Executive Director of Content and Creative for Disney+.

The 50-year-old was the former chief executive officer of Primeworks Studios, and his new jobscope for Disney+ includes developing and producing original programming, as well as acquiring content and ensuring end-to-end title launch readiness.

The Facebook page went live.
Then, in February, social media was abuzz with Disney+ activity when local tech site Aksiz spotted two Malaysia-specific Disney+ social media pages have gone live on Facebook and Instagram.

Both social media pages carry the 'Disney+hotstar' handle, and both accounts carry the blue verified account tick, indicating that there are not hoax accounts.

On top of that, Disney+ has been actively recruiting talents on LinkedIn, with Rojak Daily spotting several 'based in Kuala Lumpur' roles in the 'Jobs' section of the social media site these past few weeks:

Then, a few weeks later, a 'Keep Me Updated' webpage popped up.

These 'Update Me' pages typically mean that a new product is set to be launched, and by signing up, you'll be first to hear about it when the product is available for the public.

You can access it here.

With that much activity, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Disney+ is indeed coming to Malaysia sooner than we all think.

An interesting Disney event

Now, back to the Disney event we mentioned above.

On Tuesday (23 March), we received an invitation by The Walt Disney Company "for a morning of fun and surprises".

The Walt Disney Company did not mention what "surprises" they have in store for us, but if we were to take a guess, it could be an announcement about Disney+ based on the clues we found in the invitation card.

We can't actually publish the actual invitation card here, because they specifically said that it is "not for external publication". They did not, however, mention anything about publishing a drawing of the invitation card, so here you go:

This looks almost similar to the invite we received.
(Apologies for our drawing; we know we're not as good as that 'Bro, Don't Like That Lah, Bro' guy)

"OK, Mr Rojak Daily writer, the event could be anything; it could just be an invitation for the launch of a Disney movie," we hear you ask.

Yes, you could be right, Mr Random Citizen, but we highly doubt so.

So, here's our reasoning and theories on why the Disney event is actually related to Disney+:

#1 New name, who dis?

We ruled out the possibility that invite was for a Disney movie-related event because the invite was sent by another public relations agency. We usually get invites to review a movie directly from the marketing executives of Disney Studios themselves, so an external party sending out an invite to a Disney event? Very likely not for a movie review, or anything Disney movie-related.

#2 A 'cameo' appearance

If you can't tell from our awesome drawing above, the invitation card features the caricatures of two pretty famous characters in the Disney-verse: Elsa from 'Frozen' and Iron Man from the Marvel movies. As you've most probably heard, you'll get to stream Disney's entire library of series and movies on Disney+: from classics such as 'The Little Mermaid', to remakes such as 'Beauty And The Beast' to yes, modern favourites like 'Frozen' and 'Avengers'. So, it would make sense that Elsa and Iron Man make an appearance on the invite if it's a Disney+ event, right?

#3 Blue is the colour

Perhaps the most telling sign is that the invitation is blue in colour - the same shade of blue we see on Disney+'s social media postings, profile pictures and the 'Keep Me Updated' page! The background colour of the invite even has the same dark blue-to-light blue gradient as the Disney+ website. The last we checked, The Walt Disney Company's company colour scheme is black and white, while Disney Movies' logo uses a slightly lighter shade of blue. The only logo that uses a dark blue-to-light blue gradient? Yup, Disney+.

The colour is very familiar.
Now, before you guys get overly excited, we have to note that all the above are based on our own speculation, so please take it with a grain of salt.

Nothing about Disney+ in Malaysia has been confirmed at the time of writing, and our attempt at begging coaxing more information from the PR executive has been futile.

When we asked, with no shame, if the event was to announce the availability of Disney+ in Malaysia, the PR executive coyly replied: "Yknow, if you RSVP and attend, you can find out there if it is or nah hehe ? Or not yknow like maybe it's just some really fun activities".

So, who knows; it could really be just an ordinary Disney event (maybe a 'Frozen' x 'Iron Man' musical?), and we just spent hours writing this article and drawing the invitiation card above for nothing.

Whatever it may be, we will update you guys when we know more. Stay tuned!
