Earlier this year, local fashion designer Khoon Hooi made headlines when some of Hollywood's biggest stars wore his creations on 2020 Golden Globes red carpet.

And now, we've got another up-and-coming fashion designer that's for sure going to make the country proud.

Malaysian pride

Amazon Prime's fashion reality show 'Making The Cut', set to premiere on 27 March, will see New York-based Malaysian designer Jasmine Chong battling against 11 other designers to win a USD1 million (RM4 million-ish) prize to invest in their brands.

The show -- hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, both formerly from 'Project Runaway' -- will see 12 fashion designers/businesspeople competing with each other to grow their emerging fashion brands.

Big names such as model Naomi Campbell, fashion icon Nicole Richie, influencer Chiara Ferragni, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and designer Joseph Altuzarra are expected to judge the competition.

A new designer heading for success

Chong already has her own fast-growing fashion brand, named after herself, in New York. Her clothes have been worn by celebrities such as Ali Wong, Yuna and Grace Aki.

Jasmine and her creations.
According to Chong's website, the designer's love affair with fashion started when she was a young girl following her mother to fabric stores and watching her mother creating clothes.

She pursued her dreams at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studying fashion design and strengthened her knowledge on the business side of things by studying Fashion Business, Marketing and Merchandising at Parsons The New School for Design.

We checked out some of Chong's designs on her Instagram and loved how inclusive the designs were.

On one of her posts, she wrote: "Know what makes me happy? like really happy? When women say JC is 'luxury you can eat in'."

Know what makes me happy? like really really happy? When women say JC is “luxury you can eat in”. Here is the lovely @aliwong doing precisely that, in the Ronne turtleneck. ♥️♥️ #wearingJasmine

That really resonated with the foodie in us! Isn't it such a Malaysian thing to say as well?

We hope that Chong goes far in the competition and even wins it!

More fashion brands should be inclusive of women of different shape, sizes, colour and other differences, and also make room for our constantly fluctuating sizes.

Good luck, Jasmine Chong! We Malaysians are rooting for you!
