5 Simple Tips To Take The Best #OOTD Shots This Hari Raya
Hari Raya is just around the corner, and you know what that means: it’s time to break out all the new baju kurung or baju Melayu that you have been saving for the occasion.
Of course, that also means one thing: it’s time to take tonnes and tonnes of #OOTD (Outfit Of The Day) pictures for your Instagram feed.
However, taking a pretty #OOTD picture is easier said than done. You could be wearing the classiest outfit, but sometimes, the classiness doesn’t translate into your photos.
Don’t worry, we’re here to teach you how to take the best #OOTD shots to show off your new Hari Raya clothes.
Style it, fashionista!
#1 Find the best location
When taking a photo, the most important thing is location, location, location. You don’t want to be taking photos in front of, say, a huge rubbish bin or with a lot of people in the background, do you? You may think that it’s cool, but chances are, it will just ruin your #OOTD shot. So, remember to always check your background before you snap that photo. Our recommendation? Taking an #OOTD shot with a classic rumah papan at your kampung or a mosque in the background would instantly give you that Hari Raya mood.Pro tip: You could also try taking an #OOTD shot in front of plain walls. The focus will then be on your outfit, and not that green tong sampah at the back.
#2 Make sure there’s enough lighting
Guys, we shouldn’t really need to tell you this. Before you take any photo, make sure the place you’re standing at has sufficient lighting. If not, your picture will turn out dark, uninspiring and extremely pixelated. There’s no point showing off your Raya outfit when you can’t see it, right? The best way to do it is to find a place with good natural lighting, like in front of a window. For more dramatic effect, you could opt to take your pictures at night, using the Raya fireworks display or even sparklers as your light source. The difficulty level is higher, but the pictures will be worth it.Pro tip: Try and to have the light source in front of you. Unnecessary shadows can be unflattering at times.
#3 Be natural
As in, don’t try to force a pose. If you’ve seen a behind-the-scenes video of how professional models pose in front of the camera before, you’ll notice that they are usually just being their own self. It’s easier said than done, of course, but try flipping your hair (if you’re a girl) or pretending to take a few steps. Try not to overpose, because it will come out very unnatural. Oh, and lose that ‘V’ finger – it’s so out of style!Pro tip: Follow the ‘Instagram Outfit Pose’ - aim the camera slightly above your head while you're sitting or lying on your couch/bed/chair. This pose will effortless put the spotlight on your new baju Raya or accessories.
#4 Try different angles
You’ve found your best angle and you’re going to stick with the same angle until the day you die. There’s really nothing wrong with it…except that your Instagram feed is going to look extremely boring because all the pictures are going to look the same, different outfit and whatnot. Try experimenting with different angles; some from slightly above and some from slightly below. Different perspectives could sometimes make a huge difference.Pro tip: Try using the wide-angle function on your smartphone. It will give you an impression that your legs are longer, and at the same time, show off your fancy new baju kurung. Go on, give it a try.
#5 Don’t forget the details
An #OOTD photoshoot isn’t complete without getting a shot of the accessories you’re wearing, or the cute little bag you found at a flea market, or that gorgeous pair of shoes you got on discount. Sometimes, people pay more attention to the accessories you’re wearing compared to your outfit, so take the opportunity to wow them. For the guys, invest in some baju Melayu buttons and for the ladies, throw on a crisp bib necklace to complete your Hari Raya outfit.Pro tip: Don’t over-accessorise, because it’ll just look super messy. Pick one or two of your favourite accessories and rock them with pride.
