8 Cozy Neighbourhood Cafes You Can Get Your Caffeine and Instagram Fix From
Cafés, or hipster cafés as we say in 2017, are popping up everywhere every month or two in the Klang Valley. Most of them come with a few prerequisites – has hipster interiors/Instagram-worthy settings, promise to offer the “best artisanal coffee in town”, and also a delectable spread of cakes and/or pastries. Some of them do live up to their names, while others… solely depend on the cosmetic ‘beauty’ of their café.
Each café has their own unique identity and distinctive taste. But what some people (like us) look for in a café apart from great food and coffee, is the ambience. Who wouldn’t like the idea of skipping the crowded mall and instead, lepaking at a favourite, cosy, neighbourhood café? You end up feeling so comfortable to the point you don’t even want to leave! In light of that, we’ve strained the best cafés around the Klang Valley that you can visit and enjoy with your family and friends.

Founded by Shafinaz and Hidzad back in 2014, these former bankers have gone a long way from their banking days to baking days. The duo now runs Cake Jalan Tiung, a cake shop serving coffee and “handcrafted rustic styled bakes” in the heart of Section 9, Shah Alam. In case you’re wondering, the café isn’t located at Jalan Tiung, but it’s where Shahfinaz and Hidzad live and started their business. This café is favoured by not only youngsters, but also families who like to spend their afternoon or evening with the palatable cake spread Cake Jalan Tiung has to offer. The minimal, open concept of the café gives a very cozy vibe to its patrons. The cake menu varies from week to week, so there’s even more reasons to visit them frequently.
The most popular item on the menu would be their Salted Caramel & Chocolate Cake, and Berry Sue Pavlova. We, at Rojak Daily, however, would highly recommend their Tiung Mess (Cake Jalan Tiung’s version of Eton Mess) and their 4C Chocolate Chip Cookies that will leave you wanting more. Seriously, we’re still thinking about how sedap their cookies are!

Just further up from Cake Jalan Tiung, is Kopimeo. Their Instagram bio is “jolly good comfort food and coffee”, which actually lives up to its promises. They offer a wide variety of western-fusion cuisine that you’d never ever imagine. One of their most unique offerings is the pairing of spaghetti with the traditional Malay dish, lemak masak udang cili padi. Who would’ve thought that the marriage between these two vastly different dishes would result in one of the most brilliant gastronomical experience we’ve ever had? Apart from that, their lamb mess dish is highly sought after and they have an awesome house rule – you can only eat it by hand.
Since the café’s name has the word ‘kopi’ in it, you know you’re getting a cup of good, wholesome coffee after placing an order. Kopimeo also has a range of mouthwatering desserts that will compliment your coffee perfectly. From their Kopimeo Special French Toast to their Ferrero Roche cake, their sweet, sinful delights will never disappoint.

Honestly, have you ever seen people queueing up for a salted egg-yolk cronut? This was the case with Dotty’s, a quaint, little café situated along the bustling roads of TTDI. Cronuts weren’t very popular in Malaysia a few years back, but since the rise of salted-egg-yolk-everything last year, Dotty’s jumped on the bandwagon and used cronuts to create one of the most egg-citing pastries ever.
Their range of delectable pastries and cakes will not only win over your taste buds, but also your Instagram flatlays. #DessertGoals. They also serve wholesome meals such as burgers, pastas, and many more. So, if you’re planning to go, it’s best to go early in the morning to avoid long queues or even worse, sold out salted-egg-yolk cronuts.

Upstairs Café

Ask any Subang Jaya residents about this café, and straight off the bat they’ll tell you where it’s located and what you should order. Upstairs Café has been around for quite some time now and they’re probably one of the OGs of “hipster cafés” in Klang Valley.
The café is located on the first floor (hence, the name Upstairs) and has a very cozy ambience that’ll make you feel right at home. They serve signature pastas, all-day breakfast, and a great variety of coffee. So, what should you get? Well, everything off the menu are equally delicious, but we’d really like to recommend their red velvet cake and hot latte for first-timers. You won’t regret it!

Xiao by Crustz was founded by Koh Xiao-Ly, a young lass who’s very passionate about pastries. She’s been baking and running her own pastries/cakes business at the tender age of 21 (seriously, what have we been doing at that age?!). This lady boss found her true calling after she completed her A-levels and started working in F&B to gain experience. When she first opened her café, her pastries were all sold out within a staggering 45 minutes! Despite the initial objection from her parents, she followed her heart and look where she is today!A photo posted by Ting Fang (@tingfang87) on
Xiao-Ly specialises in French patisseries and has an artistic vision that even Buddy from Cake Boss will be jealous of. Her café has small booths and partitions between it, giving customers a more intimate setting and privacy. She produces limited quantity of pastries each day to maintain her quality, so be sure to be there before doors open. The most popular item off her menu would be the extravagant La Vie en Rose.
