Apparently Celebrity Chef Martha Stewart Thinks Nangka And Durian Are The Same Fruit
Earlier this year, MasterChef UK judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode created a stir from Europe all the way to Southeast Asia after commenting that a Malaysian contestant’s rendang dish wasn’t crispy enough.
This boo-boo led to a thing called #Rendangate, which at the time made headlines worldwide.
This not only triggered a massive backlash from Malaysians, but also from our fellow neighbours Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. Let’s just say some people should stop whitesplaining things they don’t understand in the first place.
And now, it seems that another ang moh chef is in the spotlight for misidentifying the most popular fruit not only in Malaysia, but also the whole of Asia.
Celebrity chef Martha Stewart apparently used an image of a durian for an article titled “Here's Exactly How To Use Jackfruit”. Jackfruit, in our country, is more popularly known as buah nangka.
And this obviously, this didn’t sit well with Malaysians and also those from the neighbouring countries.
Hi, @MarthaStewart this is a photo of durians, not jackfruit. https://t.co/xFBr5HuuhI pic.twitter.com/pay3twp6SY— Sumisha Naidu (@SumishaCNA) September 11, 2018
OMG @MarthaStewart! You seriously need to hire people who know what they are writing about. Better still someone who has tasted it (like me, coz I just ate durian). Oh, and you guys are weird if you think jackfruit tastes like meat. (It does not!) https://t.co/kQcpG8Ddd3— Serena (@serena_cheong) September 11, 2018
Martha Stewart confusing jackfruit for durian and writing a whole post about how to use it?*laughs in Southeast Asian*https://t.co/0MAHiXu9Dr— syafiqah (@syaf_J16) September 11, 2018

When someone who has never eaten or seen jackfruit before writes an article about it ?♀️ https://t.co/AlHj0M5vAV?— misshka ??? (@misshka) September 11, 2018
A quick check on their website showed that they have taken down the said image.Excuse my language, but WTH?! Durian and jackfruit are miles apart. Durian skin is spiky. The flesh is creamy. Jackfruit doesn't have thorns. The flesh of the fruit is firm. And we never compare the two to tofu. Ever.— thatsmyfullname (@thatsmyfullname) September 11, 2018
Meanwhile, Martha Stewart has yet to respond to this whole mess.
Maybe she's taking the time to learn about jackfruits and durian?
