Apparently You're Supposed To Stand, Not Walk On Escalators
We've been doing it wrong the whole time...
Yes, this doesn't matter much to Malaysians who don't even stand on the right to give way anyway. But maybe this can be a message to those people who hog two stair spaces on the escalator and spread their arms to cover left and right as well.Just look at our cover photo, it's lawless chaos on the escalators here in Malaysia and we're wondering why there have been so many accidents of late.
Anyway, we digress, in a report by The Guardian, the best possible way to speed up entering and exiting the escalator is by standing, two by two, on each stair on the escalator going up.
Though it may seem counterintuitive, a study by the University of Greenwich in 2011 showed that 75% of people will stand on escalators while the other 25% will walk. That's a tiny percentage of people to give way to which halves the amount of space on an escalator at a time. What you'll have is one empty row on the left of the escalator with only about two people using it.
In the report, an experiment was conducted at the Holborn station escalator in London and they found that standing, two-by-two would allow for 31.25 more people per minute to board the escalator (112.5 people on the escalator per minute versus 81.25 people per minute with a walking lane).
Will it ever take off here in Malaysia? Nah. We're all too busy waiting for the elevator to go one floor up – you know, the ones labled "For Handicapped Only".
