Courtyard by Marriott Setia Alam Review: A Great Stay for Work & Weekend Escapes
If you're looking for a quick escape from the KL hustle or just need a comfy base for a business trip in Shah Alam, Courtyard by Marriott Setia Alam might just be your new go-to. Tucked right next to Setia City Mall and a stone’s throw from the convention centre, this hotel blends convenience, comfort, and a touch of class.
We recently spent a 2D1N staycation there, and it gave us the perfect mix of downtime and discovery, just enough to recharge without straying too far from the city. From check-in to check-out, here's what we experienced.

Location that just makes sense

Now, we’ll admit, Setia Alam might seem like it’s in the middle of nowhere, especially if you’re used to the buzz of KL. But surprisingly, the location works. The hotel is directly connected to Setia City Mall via a covered walkway, which means you’re never more than a few steps away from food, shopping, and even a cinema. It’s also super close to the Setia City Convention Centre, making it a no-brainer for business travelers.

Everything you need is within walking distance, and the convenience of having a mall and convention centre right next door makes it feel like its own little hub. The area itself is quieter than KL, which adds to the chill vibe, perfect for a staycation or a work trip.

Rooms that feel like home

As part of our 2D1N stay, we were given the Executive Suite + Connecting Double, and honestly, it felt more like a stylish serviced apartment than a typical hotel room. The suite was impressively spacious, with large windows that flooded the space with natural light whie the layout was smart and intuitive and nothing felt cramped or cluttered.
The king-sized bed in the Executive Suite was an absolute dream, plush, supportive, and paired with pillows that were so soft. The connecting double room was just as inviting, making it an ideal setup for families or small groups who want to stay close while still enjoying their own space. Both rooms were thoughtfully equipped with flat-screen TVs and work desks and chairs that made catching up on emails feel less like a chore and more like a quiet moment of productivity.

One standout feature in the suite was the Nespresso machine, a definite upgrade from the usual hotel fare of instant coffee and a kettle. It added a touch of luxury to our mornings, letting us ease into the day with a proper cup of coffee while lounging in bed or planning the day’s itinerary.
Another highlight of the Executive Suite was the huge bathroom. The space included a sleek walk-in shower and a deep soaking bathtub, twin sinks which made it easy for couples or families to get ready without bumping elbows, and the well-lit mirrors. It’s the kind of bathroom that makes you want to linger a little longer, whether you're winding down after a busy day or easing into a slow morning.

Food and drink within easy reach

Breakfast at 5 Wells is solid, nothing over-the-top, but a well-balanced mix of local and Western options that covers all the bases. Some of our favourites were the char kway teow and roti canai, which were surprisingly flavourful and freshly made—a stark contrast to the bland and plain versions often served at other hotels.
Later in the day, the Pool Bar is a great spot to unwind. Perched on one of the higher leves, it offers skyline views and a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for a sundowner or a casual drink before dinner.

We also got to experience the Bite of Thailand & Malaysia dinner buffet at 5 Wells during our stay, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the evening. The spread featured a vibrant mix of regional favourites—from aromatic curries and sizzling stir-fries to street food staples that were both nostalgic and satisfying.
The Thai green curry was rich and fragrant, while the satay skewers were perfectly grilled and served with a thick, nutty peanut sauce that hit all the right notes. There was also a live cooking station, which added a bit of flair to the experience, along with a generous selection of Malaysian rice dishes, including nasi lemak, nasi ayam, nasi biryani, and even the vibrant blue-hued nasi kerabu. Each dish was well-prepared and flavourful, offering a satisfying mix of textures and spices that showcased the diversity of both cuisines.

One unexpected but welcome perk was the free-flow Starbucks coffee available throughout the buffet which was definitely a step up from the usual hotel brew and a nice touch for caffeine lovers looking to pair their meal with some coffee.
Additionally, if you’re feeling lazy or just want more variety, Setia City Mall is right next door with everything from fast food to artisanal cafes, so you’re never short on options.

Facilities to cover all of your needs

One of the standout features of Courtyard by Marriott Setia Alam is its pool. While it’s not Olympic-sized, it’s more than enough for a refreshing dip or a relaxing float while soaking in the skyline views. The only downside? The pool closes at 7 pm, which feels a bit early if you're hoping for a night swim.
For those who like to keep up with their fitness routine, the gym is open 24/7 and surprisingly well-equipped for a hotel of this size. Whether you're into cardio, strength training, or just stretching it out, the space has everything you need to get a decent workout in. It’s clean, well-lit, and rarely crowded, which makes it easy to pop in anytime without fuss.

And if you’re looking to unwind after a long day, there’s also a sauna tucked away in the changing rooms. It’s a small but welcome addition, perfect for loosening up sore muscles or simply enjoying a quiet moment of relaxation. It’s these little extras that elevate the overall experience and make the hotel feel more like a retreat than just a place to sleep.

Our verdict

Whether you're planning a quick weekend escape from the city or have business to attend to in Shah Alam, Courtyard by Marriott Setia Alam delivers on all fronts. It strikes a rare balance between comfort and convenience, offering well-designed rooms, thoughtful amenities, and a location that makes everything from shopping to dining to meetings, effortlessly accessible.
